Paul McGann as Golic

Walter Golic was one of the inmates in the Fiorina “Fury” 161 Class C Work Correctional Unit and stayed on after Weyland-Yutani had closed the prison down.

Golic had seen the Xenomorph killing other people and idolized it. He was killed in the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 when he released the beast from the toxic waste facility. Golic appears in 1992’s Alien 3 and is played by Paul McGann.

Biography

Early Life

Before Golic arrived on Fiorina 161, he had been convicted of 32 counts of murder and dismemberment and 13 counts of arson.

Ripley’s Arrival on Fiorina 161

Golic is seen in the mess hall eating near Boggs and Rains when Dillon joins them. Boggs and Rains say they don’t want to be near Golic, saying that he’s crazy and smells bad. Dillon berates them and tells them that Golic is one of them.

Later, Boggs, Rains and Golic are sent into the tunnels to survey part of the facility. The three of them are attacked by the Xenomorph. Boggs and Rains are killed and Golic is covered with Boggs’ blood. He manages to escape and Eric later sees him in the mess hall covered in blood eating by himself.

Clemens, Dillon, Aaron and Superintendent Andrews restrain him, take him to the infirmary and put him in a straitjacket. Andrews suspects he has killed Boggs and Rains. Golic claims that a Dragon killed them. Ripley, sitting in a nearby bed, corroborates Golic’s story and wants to speak to Andrews further about this.

Ripley and Clemens return to the infirmary. As Clemens is tending to Ripley, Golic sees the Dragon come from a vent. It kills Clemens but spares Ripley and Golic. It returns to the vents taking Clemens’ corpse with it. Ripley leaves to tell the others about the creature.

Ripley and the rest of the survivors trap the creature in the toxic waste unit. Morse is now guarding Golic in the infirmary. Golic asks Morse to release him but refuses. Morse tells him that they’ve trapped the creature. Morse frees Golic and then Golic attacks Morse and knocks him unconscious. He leaves the infirmary and goes to the toxic waste unit to free the Xenomorph.

Golic arrives at the toxic waste tank and finds it guarded by a lone inmate called Arthur. Golic kills Arthur and opens the tank. Golic asks the creature what it requires of him next. The Xenomorph kills Golic and rushes out into the prison once again. Later, the other survivors find Golic’s body in the waste tank.

Personality and Traits

Golic was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and many of the inmates didn’t like his instability. He got on quite well with Morse and Dillon. Golic witnessed two incidents involving the Xenomorph. The killing of Boggs and Rains and the killing of Clemens. As a result, Golic had delusional beliefs and saw the creature as a messiah. This is why he felt he had to free the creature when he heard it was trapped.

Behind-The-Scenes

The subplot showing Golic escaping the infirmary and freeing the Xenomorph was cut out in the Theatrical edition of Alien 3. It was added to the 2003 Assembly Cut.

Early Drafts

In early drafts of the shooting script, the “Dragon” doesn’t kill Golic when he releases it. It runs past him and into the prison. When they learn the creature is free once more, Eric, William, Christopher and another prisoner plan to escape and go onto the surface of Fiorina 161.

They meet up in the abattoir to escape. Golic turns the lights off to distract the inmates. Eric and Christopher go off to investigate while Golic kills William and the other inmate. He then heads off with Eric and Christopher.

When Weyland-Yutani arrives, it is Golic who meets them and takes them to the abattoir to show them the inmates he killed. When Michael Bishop is trying to convince Ripley to come with him, Golic is the one who attacks him with an axe, killing him and the Weyland-Yutani commandos open fire on Golic killing him.

Alternative Death

In another draft, Golic is not killed when the “Dragon” is released. Instead, the Xenomorph cocoons Golic in the abattoir which is discovered by Dillon and Morse later on. This sequence was part of a bigger hive scene where many of the inmates were cocooned.
