Official Announcement

Predator: Hunting Grounds was officially announced on May 9, 2019 and is developed by Illfonic. They previously developed the 2017 Friday the 13th game where you play as Jason stalking a group of councillors or playing as one of them. By the sounds of the information released so far, it’s quite similar to that game. It’s an online multiplayer shooter where you can play as a Predator and stalk a team of soldiers. Alternatively, you can play as one of the soldiers and complete objectives before the Predator finds you. Predator: Hunting Grounds appears to be a Playstation 4 exclusive and is currently set for release at some point in 2020.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is an immersive asymmetrical shooter set in remote areas around the world, where the Predator stalks the most challenging prey. Play as a member of an elite Fireteam and complete paramilitary operations before the Predator finds you. Or, play as the Predator to hunt the most worthy prey, choosing from your vast array of deadly alien tech to collect your trophies, one by one.

CEO of Illfonic, Charles Brungardt, gave a few more details about how the gameplay will work in Predator: Hunting Grounds:

One group of players will control members of an elite Fireteam who pack state-of-the-art conventional firepower, from shotguns and SMGs to sniper rifles and more. Meanwhile, one player will control the Predator: a stealthy, acrobatic killing machine bristling with exotic alien technology such as the infamous Plasmacaster. As the Fireteam attempt to carry out paramilitary missions – annihilating bad guys and recovering important items – the Predator will be closing in, using its advanced vision mode to track and ambush its prey. Creating an immersive world for the Predator universe has been so rewarding for our team. We’re massive fans of this IP, and it’s made us closely examine every aspect of the game to be certain we are staying true to the world. Fox has been an incredible part of this process.

Gamescom 2019

In August 2019, the first gameplay footage of Predator Hunting Grounds was revealed at Gamescom as well as a lot of new information. Most of the game is based around the very first Predator film from 1987. Stargazer, the government agency in the recent The Predator film, is also referenced in the game. You can play as either a member of the ‘Fire Team’ which is first person or the Predator which is third person.

We used Predator ’87 for a majority of our inspiration for the game. Which we hope the gamers can see from the jungle environment, but also in the lengths we went to behind the scenes. We researched the original weapons and actually recorded them being fired in heavily wooded areas to make sure the sound and reverberation of bounding around trees and leaves was as accurate as possible in-game.

We of course take ’87 and evolve with current day weapons and technology; we want the Fire Team to be able to be at the top of their game against the universe’s deadliest hunter. In addition, we actually tracked down the synthesizers used in the original score.

These are just a few examples of the level of detail the team is aiming for as we create Predator: Hunting Grounds. It’s been a childhood dream to work on a Predator game. The little kid in me that would play Predator in the woods with friends is beyond stoked!

Gamers will see this in little reveals. For example, we have tied Stargazer from the most recent film, then added some interesting backstory between the two factions. We cannot wait for the community to get into the game and see how we have brought it all together!

We created a system for the Predator that we call “Predkour” in the studios; think parkour meets Predator. The Predator has the ability to attack from above as well as on the ground, just like in the films. This meant we needed to create a system for the Predator to climb into the trees and move limb from limb, or structure. The Predkour system has really been the most challenging element to the game. We wanted the Predator’s movement from tree-to-tree to feel effortless and make you feel inhuman with your ability to bound around the map.

This also lends to why the Predator is in third person, versus the Fire Team’s first person. The third person view for Predator really allows the player to see not only the Predator, but also the paths available for the Predator to take; as well as hunt at the same time.

Predator Hunting Grounds PS4 Trial

It was announced in February 2020 that there will be a free weekend trial of Predator: Hunting Grounds on PS4 between March 27th-29th. Sony released a new trailer, cover art and said there will be crossplay between the PC and PS4 versions.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Returns

It was revealed in March 2020 that Arnold Schwarzenegger said he did some voicework for a a Predator videogame. While not confirmed to be for Hunting Grounds at the time, it was announced in May 2020 that for Hunting Grounds’ first downloadable content, Dutch would be a playable character and be voiced by Arnie! In addition to the new Dutch class, you also got early access to Dutch’s knife (which was fashioned from a Predator wrist-blade) and the Hammerhead, an updated model of Dutch’s M16 from the film. All players received 20 audio tapes featuring Arnie as Dutch too.

  1. Looks clunky and limited.

Why cant we have a Predator RPG…Trophy room on your own craft, that would act as your base. You could run missions, take challenges for risky hunts, jump from world to world, system to system. You could travel back to Yautja Prime, for whatever reason.

  2. If there are campaigns then I’m glad. Otherwise we will be getting same old scenerio:
“the Fireteam attempt to carry out paramilitary missions – annihilating bad guys and recovering important items”
I’m not sure if there is much divergence on that, but the lack of things “to do” is the number one thing people griped about for Friday the 13th. I’m sure one can create a story around their situation and change the objectives each game.

The assumption needs to be had that the Fireteam already knows that there is a Predator amongst them. And that they have an idea of how to deal with them. That said, you can add so many different objects to change the gameplay. Changing some maps to night and adding lit torches that players can throw or light a number of them can add some gameplay changes.
They already said that you can use mud. I’m not sure if its an interactive thing, like pressing X in a mud area allows you to glaze yourself with mud. This is a similar mechanic. I wish they wouldnt keep us in the dark on things like this. Its already 2020. April is around the corner.

  3. I heard a recent rumor that suggested that Predator: Hunting Grounds was a timed exclusive. Now I understand this is hard information to trust as the game developers and Sony has only ever advertised the game as a exclusive to the PlayStation.

The other rumor suggested a Campaign; now remember this is the same company who brought us Friday the 13th which was also advertised as a Multiplayer only title and yet it also released the challenge tower which was essentially a campaign and than there was the offline with bots mode which functioned as a way to practice or enjoy the game without the difficulties of online connection and overly competitive players.

I do hope that the rumors are true, as it’s quite upsetting to be so close to a new Predator game and yet so far away because my most recent PlayStation stopped functioning.

  4. Can’t say I’m excited about this one. It’s made by the same blokes who did Friday the 13th the game, which is hardly confidence-inspiring.

I’d much rather have an open worldish game in the vein of monster hunter or Horizon Zero Dawn, where you play as a Predator hunting exotic alien prey. Players could build clans and work their way up the yautja heirarchy.
