Eric Buggy

Eric Buggy was one of the inmates in the Fiorina “Fury” 161 Class C Work Correctional Unit and stayed on after Weyland-Yutani had closed the prison down. Eric was killed by the Xenomorph when the prisoners were using themselves as bait to lure the Xenomorph into the lead mold. Eric appears in 1992’s Alien 3 and is played by Niall Buggy.

Biography

Early Life

Eric was a serial killer who kidnapped and murdered six teenage girls between 2157 and 2158. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Life on Fiorina 161

Eric worked as the cook in the prison.

Ripley’s Arrival on Fiorina 161

An EEV, ejected from the USS Sulaco, carrying Ellen Ripley, Corporal Hicks, Newt and Bishop the android crashed onto Fiorina 161 in 2179. There was just one survivor – Ellen Ripley. When Boggs, Rains and Golic are tasked with surveying the tunnels, Rains and Boggs are killed by the ‘Dragon’ and Golic returns to the mess hall to eat. Eric is the one who finds him covered in blood and tells the Superintendent.

The inmates come up with a plan to use the quinitricetyline to lure the Xenomorph into the toxic waste unit. The plan is successful despite many prisoners dying in the process.

Golic later frees the ‘Dragon’ so Ripley and Dillon convince the prisoners to use themselves as bait to lure the Xenomorph into the lead mold. Eric reluctantly volunteers to take part. Eric was responsible for activating the piston when the Xenomorph came to the chamber.

As the ‘Dragon’ was near the chamber, Eric panicked and almost activated the pistol but was stopped by Ripley just in time. Ripley calmed him down and they returned to the chamber.

As many of the prisoners were killed, Kevin was attacked and Dillon dragged him back to the piston chamber. Ripley told Eric to stay at the lever while they helped Kevin who died anyway.

The Xenomorph recovers Kevin’s body from the chamber and escapes. Eric panics again and this time activates the the piston. The rest of the survivors rush to lure the Xenomorph back to the chamber. Eric is killed when he wanders into the corridors and is killed by the ‘Dragon’. Ripley finds his body later.

Personality and Traits

Eric was one of the more quiet and reserved inmates on Fiorina 161.

Behind-The-Scenes

The Special Edition contains an extra scene involving Eric. When Golic witnesses Boggs and Rains’ deaths, he returns to the mess hall to eat. Eric approaches him and realises he is covered in blood, and tells the Superintendent.

Early Drafts

In earlier drafts, Golic actually killed Eric along with other inmates in the prison’s abattoir when the Xenomorph was freed. When Michael Bishop arrives, Golic shows him Eric’s body.

Alien 3 Novelization (1992 Novel)

In the Alien 3 novelization by Alan Dean Foster, Eric appears as in the film. The novelization mostly follows the same path as the Alien 3 Assembly Cut. In the book, Eric doesn’t pull the piston trigger out of fear. Ripley tells him to do it but the Xenomorph escapes.

Alien 3 Comic (1992 Comic)

The Alien 3 Comic is a mixture of the theatrical and assembly cut with some new additions.

Trivia

• Eric’s death isn’t seen in either the Theatrical or Assembly Cut of Alien 3. The novelization says that Ripley finds his and William’s body after the piston is started.
