Development

Survios revealed on July 20, 2022 that they were making an Aliens game for consoles, PC and virtual reality systems. On April 26, 2024, Survios and 20th Century Games finally announced the game’s title, platforms and release date along with a short teaser. Alien: Rogue Incursion was developed in Unreal Engine 5.

Developer Survios had some experience in making film-based virtual reality games and the company’s chief product officer, TQ Jefferson, went out to find more licensed properties. Jefferson was previously an executive at 20th Century Games and worked with the developers of 2021’s Aliens: Fireteam Elite and 2023’s Aliens: Dark Decent. He thought the Aliens franchise would be a perfect fit for the virtual reality genre.

Early on, Survios made a small slice of the game called a First Playable, which featured a high level of completion to show everybody what the game would be like. Jefferson remarked, “The game looked like Alien but didn’t play or feel like Alien. We realized we weren’t making what we had envisioned. We were trying to do too much, which distracted us from creating a great core gameplay loop. We decided to lean hard into our strengths and build a bespoke experience for VR first and adapt that for PC/Console second.”

Survios realigned the project and developed a Partner Playable demo and showed it to Disney, Sony and Meta and they got a great reaction from the studios. The demo has you moving through a facility, steam blowing, lights flickering and you have your Pulse Rifle and motion tracker. You had to fight your way through Xenomorphs to get to the Med Bay. It looked like Alien, sounded like Alien and was what Jefferson had originally envisioned for the game.

Survios worked closely with Disney and 20th Century Studios to make sure they weren’t stepping on anybody’s toes regarding then-upcoming projects like Alien: Romulus. Writer Alex White took inspiration from the 2014 game Alien: Isolation and it having a strong lead character in Amanda Ripley. Survios liked the action scenes in the final act of Aliens and the behaviour of the Xenomorphs in the game is similar to the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park.

While the game takes place on a planet called Purdan, specifically created for the game, you play as Zula Hendricks who is voiced by Andia Winslow. Hendricks has previously been in a number of Aliens comics and novels. Jefferson said “The reason why is that we wanted a character that had some history in the timeline, where we are between the first and second film, We wanted someone that is a trained colonial marine and has encountered Xenomorphs before. We wanted a badass woman of color and she knows exactly what genre she’s in. She knows she is in for an action-horror-survival adventure.”

Hendricks isn’t the only familiar face in the game. Android Davis 01 also appeared in previous Aliens comics and novels and is voiced by Robbie Daymond.

Alien: Rogue Incursion‘s music was composed by Sara Barone and made use of woodwind instruments. She worked closely with audio lead Chris Dang to create music that would make you question whether it was a Xenomorph or the environment.

In May 2025, it was announced that a non-VR version, named Alien: Rogue Incursion – Part One – Evolved Edition, was coming to PC and PS5 on September 30, 2025.

Marketing

When Alien: Rogue Incursion was formally announced in April 2024, a short teaser was released. The first gameplay footage was released in May 2024. During Comic-Con 2024, a new trailer was released showing the main character is none other than Zula Hendricks who appeared in the comics and novels. In August 2024, a Xenomorph trailer was released along with a Weapons & Gear Trailer showing the player what they will have at their disposal.

In November 2024, a Story Trailer was released which reveals more about the game’s story. A Launch Trailer was released in December 2024 to celebrate its launch on PC and PS5. A Meta Quest 3/3S Launch Trailer was released in January 2025 to celebrate its launch on the Meta Quest.

Release

Alien: Rogue Incursion was released on PS5 and Windows on December 19, 2024. The Meta Quest version was supposed to be released at the same time but was delayed until February 13, 2025 for more “fine-tuning”.

“Part 2” Controversy

After the game was released in December 2024, players realised that Part 1 had been added to the title card and achievements list. The game also ends on a cliffhanger telling players that Zula Hendricks will return in Part 2. Fans were confused as Survios didn’t mention before the game’s release that Alien: Rogue Incursion would be split into two parts. Survios then apologised to players for misleading them and they released the following statement:

To our valued community,

We have recently received a lot of feedback about the inclusion of “Part One” in Alien: Rogue Incursion’s opening moments, within the achievement/trophy list, and store pages.

Never did we intend to mislead or cause confusion about what this game is, and we now understand how the addition of “Part One” could be interpreted.

Part One is a standalone adventure which ends with a cliffhanger, and we wanted fans to know that there would be more on the horizon, so we decided to confirm Part Two alongside the launch. The entire team at Survios are fans of the Alien universe, and cannot wait to tell more stories about Zula, Davis, and others.

While we have nothing to announce about Part Two, beyond that it is actively in development, we promise to share more exciting updates at a later date.

We appreciate the excitement and passion you have shown towards Alien: Rogue Incursion, and hope that you enjoy exploring Purdan and Castor’s Cradle as much as we enjoyed creating it.

In a statement sent to PSU.com, Survios’ chief product officer, TQ Jefferson also apologized.

We are excited to tell a story with Alien: Rogue Incursion that can stretch beyond this first standalone game. It was never our intention to mislead the fans by revealing that the story would continue, and for that, we apologize.

We always thought we had a compelling game, but after initial early gameplay feedback, our confidence grew. We went from ‘we think there’s more to tell here,’ to ‘we know there’s more to tell.’ Part One is a standalone adventure which ends with a cliffhanger, and we wanted fans to know that there would be more on the horizon, so we decided to confirm Part Two alongside the launch.

We’re all massive fans of Alien, and Zula in particular. Work is already underway for Part Two, and we look forward to sharing more with you in 2025!

Reception

Critic reviews of Alien: Rogue Incursion have been generally mixed to positive. It’s currently sitting on a score of 74 on Metacritic for the PS5 version. Most critics said that it was a good first attempt at bringing virtual reality to the Alien franchise. They liked the faithfulness to the material and the atmosphere. Some criticism was aimed at the technical issues, repetitive combat and that save points can be a bit too far apart.

God is Geek scored the PC version 9/10 praising the Xenomorph AI, story and controls. “Alien: Rogue Incursion features a true “alien” experience, diving into the roots of the franchise and giving players one of the most authentic journeys into the world of Weyland-Yutani and their corrupt ways. The xenomorphs are smart, keeping you on your toes every step of the way, featuring an engaging story that makes you want to uncover the secrets within. The controls are easy to get used to, and with so many tools you never struggle to equip the correct one. Survios has made a great game, and I loved every second of it.”

 Alien: Rogue Incursion

Meanwhile, for the PS5 version, IGN scored the game  7/10, praising the story and atmosphere: “Alien: Rogue Incursion is a faithful and entertaining stab at bringing Alien to virtual reality. The excellent story, spot-on Alien environments, and creepy Xenomorphs keep the horrifying times going throughout its eight-hour duration, even when repetitive combat, predictable AI, and the odd bug here and there make it clear this is the first attempt that it is.”

Similarly, Push Square awarded the game 7/10: “Alien: Rogue Incursion is a solid first attempt from Survios to capture the iconic sci-fi franchise. If you’re a fan of the series like we are, then you’ll be giddy as you first get to hold your own pulse rifle; you’ll shiver as your motion tracker’s pulsating tone gets higher; and you’ll revel in the disgusting details of the H.R Giger-inspired Alien nests.”

Game Rant was more negative, scoring it 4/10. They praised the atmosphere but criticized the backtracking, story cliffhanger and technical issues. “I think if Rogue Incursion trimmed down its back-half, had a proper ending, and drastically reduced the xenomorph encounters so that they were more meaningful, it would be easier to recommend. But while I mostly enjoyed the first half of the game, the second half was a headache-inducing chore. “
