Pre-Production

On June 24, 2014, it was revealed that Shane Black would direct a reboot to Predator. He wrote the treatment for it and Fred Dekker wrote the script. John Davis produced the new Predator film. There was some initial reports that it was going to be a reboot/remake but on June 25, 2014, Shane Black clarified that he will be making a sequel in the Predator series and not a reboot.

Shane Black is no stranger to the franchise having played commando Hawkins in the 1987’s Predator. Most recently, he co-wrote and directed 2013’s Iron Man 3. Whilst promoting The Nice Guys, Shane Black spoke about how he became attached to The Predator, stating he hadn’t initially wanted the job despite Fox getting in contact and asking him to do it. It was Fox’s willingness to make a big budget, “spectacle” film that convinced Black to become involved.

 The Predator (2018)

Sterling K Brown, Trevante Rhodes, Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Shane Black, Olivia Munn & Keegan-Michael Key

In August 2015, producer John Davis said Shane Black’s script has a fresh perspective and will reinvent the franchise. At the end of November 2015, Fred Dekker confirmed that the script for Predator 4 had been “turned in”. On the 16th of February 2016, Shane Black confirmed Predator 4’s title was in fact The Predator.

There were rumours circulating for years that Arnold Schwarzenegger might reprise his role as Dutch Schaefer in a Predator film. Schwarzengger had lunch with Black but Schwarzenegger revealed was very unhappy with the script and refused to take part, saying he’d only do it if “there’s a chance that they rewrite it, or make it a more significant role.” His role in the film was going to be very minimal.

 The Predator (2018)

Fugitive Predator

In April 2016, rapper 50 Cent said he would have a role in the Predator film but this never transpired. There were a few different actors in the running for the lead role. Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper reportedly passed on the lead role. James Franco was in the running at one point. MMA Fighter Conor McGregor was offered the role but turned it down due to money.  Boyd Holbrook replaced Del Toro. Olivia Munn then joined the cast as a scientist in the movie. The character Keyes was played by Jake Busey who happens to be the son of the government agent Peter Keyes from Predator 2. Peter Keyes was played by Gary Busey who is Jake’s father in real-life.

Production

The Predator was originally due to begin filming in September 2016 but that was delayed. Filming commenced in February 20, 2017 and ended filming May 15, 2017 in Vancouver, Canada. Amalgamated Dynamics who are no stranger to the franchise having worked on Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, AvP and AvP Requiem handled the practical effects such as the Predator costume. The Fugitive Predator‘s armour was created by Quantum FX

Post-Production

The visual effects were provided by MPC, Atomic Fiction, Raynault VFX, Rising Sun Pictures and Proof. The Upgrade Predator is the first time in a Predator film that a Predator was a purely CGI creation. Henry Jackman did the score for the film, which took Alan Silvestri’s themes from the original Predator. The film’s soundtrack album was released by Lakeshore Records on September 28, 2018.

 The Predator (2018)

The Upgrade Predator – Most of the third act was reshot during the nighttime.

There were some considerable reshoots during post-production. Most of the third act of the film was reshot due to the poor reaction from the test screenings. Firstly, the Ark was carrying a few hybrid creatures in stasis tubes which escape and the Loonies have to fight them. These scenes were in the test screenings with unfinished visual effects. Two ‘Emissary’ Predators were cut from the finished film. They would have been seen firing mounted guns during an APC chase, battling the Upgrade Predator and the hybrid creatures.

Originally, Edward James Olmos was going to play General Woodhurst working above Traeger’s character. There was a scene showing Olmos in his office and another at the Ark. Originally, the third act was shot during the day time but according to Black, the CGI looked terrible so it was changed to night. Edward James Olmos said his scenes were cut due to pacing issues. None of these deleted scenes were on the DVD/Blu-Ray though you could see some footage in the behind-the-scenes features. Two alternative endings were shot – one showing Ripley in a pod with a breather mask and another with an adult version of Newt in a pod. (See The Predator Deleted Scenes for more info on these missing scenes).

Marketing

The first teaser trailer was shown at Cinemacon in April 2018 and it was later released online on May 10, 2018. On June 26, 2018, a new The Predator trailer was released. On August 31, 2018, 20th Century Fox released the final trailer for The Predator.

Release

On February 28, 2015, Fox announced the release date as March 2, 2018 though this was later changed to February 9, 2018 to avoid clashing with monster shark movie Meg. In April 2017, Fox announced a new release date of August 3, 2018 for the movie, delaying it by six months. The Predator was delayed yet another time and was eventually released September 14, 2018. It had its premiere at TIFF in Toronto.

Sex Offender Controversy

 The Predator (2018)

Olivia Munn

Just hours before The Predator was due to premiere on September 6th, it was reported that 20th Century Fox had cut a scene out at the last minute featuring Steven Wilder Striegel who was a registered sex offender. L.A. Times reported it with statements from actress Olivia Munn, director Shane Black and 20th Century Fox. Fox stated they weren’t aware of Striegel’s background but Shane Black initially tried to defend Striegel, who was a friend of his. Later the same day, Black apologised and said he was ‘misled’ by a friend. Olivia Munn criticised Shane Black for casting him but thanked Fox for deleting the scene.

Munn also criticised her castmates for not giving her any support. On September 8th, The Predator cast members were scheduled to do interviews at TIFF to promote the film. Munn later said a number of them cancelled any interviews along side her and one even walked out of an interview when the deleted scene was mentioned. Olivia Munn said that none of her castmates had reached out to her and criticised them for making her feel like the bad guy. She did an interview with The Hollywood Reporter and she said she felt lonely sitting there by herself and Shane Black hadn’t spoken to her directly but appreciates his public apology.

As part of L.A. Times’ original report, they asked the other castmembers for statements but they refused. Munn said she had contacted them directly and encouraged them to make statements. None of them did but made some comments in the subsequent days. Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes and Augusto Aguilera did an video interview with L.A. Times. Rhodes and Aguilera said they weren’t disappointed in Black but more at the situation and thanked Olivia for speaking up. Munn said she didn’t accept Black’s apology because it wasn’t done to her personally.

The next day on September 8th, Keegan-Michael Key issued a statement and said that he wasn’t scheduled to do any interviews with Munn and that he’d reached out to her the previous week to say he was proud of her. Sterling K. Brown also issued a statement apologising to Munn and thanked Fox for deleting the scene. On September 10th. Boyd Holbrook apologised for being quiet but thanked Munn for speaking up. He said he did cancel press interviews on the previous Saturday because he didn’t want to cause any further pain to the victim.

On September 13th, the victim involved in Striegel’s crime came forward and identified herself. She thanked Munn for raising the situation. On September 17th, Jake Busey told Vanity Fair “I think it could’ve been done like a month from now, and let the studio and the director have their night of the release and the movie, and not destroy the movie over a discovery that was made a year after filming—and 10 years after the incident. I think the timing could have been better. The director was in tears at the red carpet, which is not really the way you want it to be. But it’s done, it’s put to bed.” Olivia Munn took to Twitter to criticise Vanity Fair for running the story with Jake Busey and said she wasn’t responsible for putting the story out publicly.

The deleted scene in question would have served as Casey Bracket’s introduction. Striegel played a jogger who bumps into Casey as she is with her dog.

Box Office

The Predator had a budget of $88M. In its first weekend, The Predator came out on top with $24 million domestically while overseas, it made $30.7 million for a worldwide total of $54.7 million. For comparison sake. 2010’s Predators made $24.7m in its opening weekend while AvP Requiem made $10m. They both went on to make around $128m worldwide. The bad news, both those movies were made for around $45m and The Predator cost $88m to make. The Predator ended up making $51M domestically and $109.5m overseas for a worldwide total of $160.5m.

Reception

The Predator currently has a 33% ‘Rotten’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 255 reviews. The film gained a mixed reception with critics. Many praised the characters and the relationships with each other and the film is very gory and graphic despite copious amounts of CGI blood. The film, however, falls apart in the final act – many reviewers said it was rushed, badly edited and the visual effects were poor. The new Upgrade Predator also doesn’t bring much to the table other than being bigger and stronger than a regular Predator.

Media Releases

The Predator was released on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD formats on December 18, 2018 in America and the UK. As the third act was reshot during the night, Shane Black wanted to include both versions of the media releases – Predator AM and Predator PM but Fox refused as they didn’t want to pay for the visual effects during the daytime version.

Merchandise

A novelization of The Predator, written by Christopher Golden and a prequel novelization called  The Predator: Hunters And Hunted, written by James A. Moore were released shortly after the film came out. NECA released six figures in 2018/2019 based on the Predators seen in the film. Three Fugitives were released, an Assassin Predator and each of the Emissary Predators which were cut from the final film.

  1. Why would they say they’re the only ones who ever killed predators? The gun given to him at the end of part 2 was obviously a sign he wasn’t the first to do it. I think it would be cool to seem them attack during older time periods. I liked predators, and I hope they can just come up with something original for the formula since band of people with 1 or 2 survivors is getting old.

  2. Think idea of Predator race being hunted/invaded by somebody else would be very bad one as then your just making a galatic war movie which goes against premise of Predator universe.

(1)They are a very technologically advanced race of galatic game hunters that hunt species that (Including the Alien) are or seem little more than wild beasts or races like humans which are not as advanced and might be seen by them (The same way we view pets like dogs) as not even having the same level of intelligence/consciousness.(They could conquer us if they wanted to but that is of no interest to them.)

(2)To attempt to do this to races as advanced/more advanced than themselves would be inviting war so they presumably wouldn’t even try to and to have they themselves coming under attack then it just turns into an extraterrestial war movie.

  3. Personally, I’d like to see some of the excellent, original Dark Horse Comic stories of Aliens vs Predator and Predator, put into film. With the first Alien/Predator cross-over, set on a remote planet with Weyland-Yutani ranchers farming indigenous livestock, while Predators are laying hundreds of their own, farmed Alien eggs on the outskirts of the ranch, allowing the cattle to become infected, bringing the humans into the Alien/Predator conflict, which was brilliant. Then there’s Predator with Concrete Jungle, Cold War featuring Dutch’s brother, a cop, who gets involved with the Predators while searching for Dutch who’s been missing since his encounter in South America. Those are some of the many stories true fans would like to see on the big screen, and give recognition to the great story tellers and artists who have brought us fantastic comics over the years.

  4. can’t wait to sit in the i-max and witness the awesome predator franchise continue. the predators reveal in the original predator was the most awesome of all monsters ever. the predator as the idea of an awesome uncaring , skin you, pull your spine and skull out with precision, alien from another world has endless story possibilities. i could go on all night about predator but i’m not being paid money to do it.

  5. Come on Predators is a great movie but give us a different storyline than Predators hunting and killing a few ppl getting kind of boring. Cause u know exactly how the movie is going to happen the predators are going to kill everybody then there is going to be a survivor the End. I would like to see their hm world. Hell in the past movies we have got their weapons technology and a ship why dont we have something like where we invade them for a change hell anything but the same old plot

  6. I would like to see a movie shot from the predators point of view Why are the super’s hunting the Classic predators maybe even show there home worlds. What drives them to hunt other life forms and each other { Very Viking Like}I don’t Get why A Predator would hunt down Dutch when they could have killed both Glover and Lathem out right but instead gave them both antique and i might add pricey weapons Predators are hunters they love the hunt and the sport of it plus Predator two proves they have a code when he refused to kill the female cop in the subway even though she had a gun when after Scanning her seeing she was prago, besides they are very prideful of there super breed and hunting skills for a wimpy human to defeat one of them would impress them not make them want to hunt him down come on!

  7. Hi,
I have a perfect script for Predator sequel created for Arnold Schwarzenegger and based mostly on 1st movie with 2nd elements. I’m looking for any contact with producer or director…

  8. I’d prefer a sequel than a reboot. Too many films are given the reboot option. Let the original movies stand as they are. If you can’t think of a decent storyline for a sequel, leave it alone & do something else. I wouldn’t mind another AVP film either, just don’t set it on present day Earth. The second AVP was a bit of a disappointment after the first one. ’nuff said methinks.

  9. In the origonal comics the predators actually will accept fighters that best their champions and bring them into their clan..they gave that a nod in the first AVP movie. Brodie could come back that way opening up a side arc that would make for an intense comic or animated short!

  10. I have an idea that would allow “Dutch” to come back and also give us a great modern setting in the middle east…Joint operations between all SF groups target a band of Predators operating in a desert setting…seals, green barrett, marine scout sniper, ect all with the directive of eliminating all alien life and retrieving more predator tech…the twist would be the larger worrior cast coming in towards the end and attacking the remaining SF commandos when we get our first glimpse of space marines destroying the worrior casts ship in orbit!!! Let me know what u think!!

  11. I’d like to see a movie that starts with new location and material, but then would somehow link up with a adrien brody’s character and carry on his story post predators. I still re watch predators. Deeply love the whole feel of that movie.

  12. A Brilliant Predator film in my eyes as a fan Would be to go deeper in to the blood lust of the Predators and the blood feud between the different Clans.Show a little more of the History of the Predators and how they evolved into the galactic Hunters that they are. Of course it could open up alot of opportunities and bringing Arni back as a captured trophy who escapes the clutches of a Clan & has to battle along side the Rival clan to survive the blood feud between two Predator Factions Maybe earning a place as the only none Yaunta being to join a Predator clan and to go on and complete a right of passage, opening up new films..

  13. I think a good idea is for Dutch(Arnold) given special orders of finding a way to The Predators. Being he has survived the frightening encounter before. Dutch along with special hand picked special forces, go on a trip to another world for a rescue mission where they find Brody and the female alive but in dire need of medical attention from fighting off swarms of assaults from the Predators. The only thing, the time is ticking down as what is left of hero”s try to escape off the “Death Planet”….. ( The military recovered a crashed Predator space craft which is powered by a alien energy device was rebuilt by the military. Since it is powered by local power sources, is really unknown how long the portal will hold open and what will come back-

  14. It should be a follow up to predators.Brody trying to get back to earth while battling aliens dropped off by predators and ultimetly fighting predators in the process..maybe even merging with different alians on that planet jungle setting

  15. At first I didn’t care for the Super Predators because their existance made the other predators seem less
formidable. Then I saw Dark Horse Comics’ Predators: Clan War story, I liked the idea of other castes and
classes of the Yaunta society and a warrior class should be bigger and more violent and not have the same code of honor like the hunter class. I wouldn’t mind seeing them return in that capacity. Because if they are concidering Predators to be the 3rd movie in the franchise and this next one being number 4 there should
be some connection between the two movies.

  16. I would like to see Adam Baldwin in ” Predator 4 . Also saying each of the rumours , give a lot of “Fans a reason to
pause ,when the studios delay with reason . The next one is a reboot ..

  17. Just imagine. Michael Biehn, a little older, pretty much playing a character similar to Hicks or Reese only this time hes facing off with the Predator. And none of that big goofy headed super predator crap. We need the REAL predator back. And make it take place in the 40s or the wild west or the future… something interesting. Now thats the movie I want to see.

  18. in my opinion Arnold Schvarzenegger lead a team of commandos, intending to catch a live predator and get hold of the space technology.Operation fails, the rest of the surviving team is in the midst of war between two predators Clan.Half of the film may be in the country and the other half on another planet.Arnold team is made up of Dwayne Johnson,Staham,Stallone………………… itd. I would especially like to Arnold and Stallone only survive and to enter into history, living catching predators. For me was a real movie, I’d love to hear your feedback:):):):)

  19. I love these movies but I think it would be a good idea to eliminate the human element and have a movie directly devoted to predators and a war or something or a AVP movie devoted to only the predators trying to beat the aliens.

  20. the new script should be. a tactical marine team. goes and hunts the predators. u seen the predator weapon in the brief case they have learned to make are weapons more advanced and go after them that be more interesting.

  21. Well there’s no reason that they couldnt pick up where they left off in predators in 2010 like it stated above it was left open ended… the merc lived along with the woman.. they started too walk and more victims were dropped in for the hunt!! so why couldnt they pick up where they left off and have it that the merc and woman track down the people that were dropped in explain to them what is going on the predators are going to return for the hunt obviously they could banned together try and over take them steal a ship and try to find there way home.. then they could make it that instead of them finding earth they discover another planet similar to ours only too find that its the predators world or whatever and just keeping running with it i mean if they can make 10 jason movies and like what 8 or 9 or how ever many freddy movies i’m sure they could run a predator’s the same way even alien vs predator i mean yes it’s gonna cost money but give the fans a great movie and you should have no problems making a profit just my thoughts tho
