They'd have to bring Bill Paxton in to do it though. Anyone else would be unacceptable.

THIS.

Well ... maybe THIS INSTEAD so they know we here at the galaxy don't tolerate f**k-ups.

Alright, report time. Zero plot details ahead, but I'll slap some tags on for dramatic effect.

Spoiler
I strongly believe that you haven't seen a movie until you've left the theater and you're replaying everything in your head from point C to point A, so these are my first impressions. Short version: terrific. Great movie.

Even without Flubber.

I'm predicting that a lot of people are going to be disappointed in Super 8, and that will come from a fundamental misunderstanding of what the movie is trying to be. It's not a game-changing monster flick. The title tells you all you need to know: it's JJ Abram's shoestring-and-duct tape Spielberg fan film, only with ILM providing the paper mache monster effects. It's a movie about making movies as a kid (I had The Basilisk running through my head the whole time, not to mention my own passionate camcorder efforts, and it made me smile so much my ears popped off).

Spielbergian elements out the wazoo; it's ET, only ET is the shark from Jaws; it's Jaws, only Chief Brody's son is in the Goonies, and so on and so forth. Abrams is an honours student at Weirdy-Beardy's School of Film, and he uses every trick in the book.

There's also a lot of potent commentary between the Close Encounters-style close-ups. There's a recurring gag where people will miss out on the event of the century because they're stoned out of their mind or otherwise distracted by their Walkman; it's played for laughs, but I found a lot of significance in those moments. Childhood is a different thing than it was twenty years ago. To quote the film, it's a slippery slope.

Oh. And the sound is fecking incredible. Skywalker Sound gave me a Ben Burtt Boner throughout. The train crash alone had everyone in the theater saucer-eyed and vibrating in their seats long after the dust had cleared. If you're going to go for anything, go for the noise.

Sweet movie. I loved it for what it was - a homemade monster movie, plus production values, minus none of the charm.
