But, as a film overall, I liked it.
Not as much as Gremlins
but I liked it
What a pointless comparison.
I have to agree. From the sounds of it they're different kinds of film, even if both deal with monstrous entities (which are, as well, different in nature and characterization). It'd be like me saying Oh, I liked Titanic, but The Fifth Element was waaaay better! Which I think so, but there's no real point in saying it while reviewing a single film. If anything one could compare it to films more congruent to what it is.

Nelec and the guy from Event Horizon needed more screen time.

Because Gremlins is his all time favorite movie. 2001 is my all time favorite movie but I don't say "Drive Angry is good but not as much as 2001".

I'm not really feeling the goonies comparison.

Spoiler
Goonies kids weren't put in a situation where a monster was eating peeps.

Also, Dakota's sister is going to be a star in the future.  A couple of times she absolutely stole the show and she was only pretend acting.

Each kid had a super power that they used.
Plus each kid was very generic.

Can't comment on the Goonies, but how were the kids in Super 8 generic? I felt like, by the time 20 minutes passed, I knew each one of them. They were characterized extremely well, I thought. The kids were probably my favorite thing about the movie.

Each fit a specific role and you knew it was the second they showed up.
Spoiler
The hero kid was the hero kid and he was all nice willing to do everything for the movie etc.The little kid liked fire so EVERY SINGLE scene the kid was in he HAD to show this. etc

Each kid had their role that they did not deviate a single inch away from.

I liked it. I looked like a
Spoiler
smaller, uglier version of the Cloverfield monster

But don't see this for the monster. See it for the story and the acting.
