So, umm...You do know the guy/girl you play as in Halo Reach is not the Master Chief, right? And that Reach is a prequel to Combat Evolved.

Master Chief is currently floating around in space, as seen in the after-the-credits scene in Halo 3. Halo 4 picks up where Halo 3 left off.

Halo Reach is a prequel to Combat Evolved like Nightmare Asylum said. Meaning that it's set before the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd game. We're all pretty sure that Master Chief is a guy, or a girl with a deep voice.

Reach is the sequel to Halo 3 in the sense that it is the next full game (Wars was a side game and ODST was an expansion), but it is a prequel to the first in terms of story. On the back of the box it even says "Every Legend has a Beginning". Also, Master Chief is a male. His name is John. And Master Chief is one of many Spartans. He is just the last (known) Spartan left at the time the original Halo trilogy took place.

During Reach, John was performing a space mission. He then makes it to the Pillar of Autumn (the ship you save at the end of Reach). Combat Evolved picks up immediately as Reach is ending.

And there are more Spartans alive, but the UNSC has no way of finding them. Red Team from Halo Wars is a perfect example, as they are currently stranded in space in the Spirit of Fire.
