Interesting, I wouldn't have thought Scott would want to work with mid tier department heads, especially this late in his career. Guess he has to settle for what he can get.

Thanks for the quotes, I really need to get around to reading that book.

Petro Pascal joins the show!

I think Scott is going full hardcore mode for Maximus Profitus! ;D Question: who's gonna be the main lead then? Cast is getting ridiculous. We already have Denzelus 'My Man' Washingtonus and now Pedro.

The Mandalorian? He's old enough to play Caracalla and Geta's father I think. Emperor Septimius Severus. Who knows?

Quote from: Ingwar on Apr 29, 2023, 05:21:01 PMI wonder who's gonna portray their father, Emperor Septimius Severus and mother, Empress Julia Domna.

So will he be playing the brother of Maximus? Or maybe the son actually survived.

Well, he does look like a Spaniard. I think Maximus saw his son in the afterlife with his wife at the end. Didn't he bury them as well?

I wonder if Connie Nielsen's character, Lucilla, might not have married Septimius Severus in Ridley's alternate timeline? In real life she was assassinated by Commodus after betraying him (he was not so merciful in real life).

If Septimius is of higher nobility would his and Lucilla's boys then not be first in line for emperorship? How does ancient Roman ascension work?

Or perhaps Caracalla (next in line) connived to sell Lucius into slavery in North Africa removing Lucius from the ascension line and subsequently causing the rift between Caracalla and Geta.

After Geta gets offed and Caracalla gets offed in revenge, then perhaps her older son, Lucius as sole surviving heir to the Empire needs to step in to clean up the mess like @KiramidHead speculated?

You might be right. Lucius, like Maxiumus and every decent protagonist, will have to go through his rite of passage. I hope it's going to be political movie with hack and slash in gladiatorial arena. Keep in balanced. I also hope it's going to start with a battle ;D

Seems like Denzel might be Septimus:

QuoteLucius Septimus Severus was the 13th emperor of the Roman Empire (from 193 to 211 AD), and quite uniquely, was its first ruler who hailed from Africa.

Wow, never knew that. And Septimius does look a lot like Denzel in those portraits. Think you may be onto something here.

Interresting puzzling this all out.

Yeah, obviously we're gonna find out who is who but it's fun to have a guess. I presume that Petro will be one the gladiators and buddy of Lucius. A shot in the dark.

Some more theories and speculation

Though I'm not so keen on those, I think the ones we came up with on here might be closer to the mark.

Quote from: Times of MaltaFilming for the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Gladiator will take place this summer, Film Commissioner Johann Grech said on Wednesday.

Industry insiders had confirmed in March that production for the film will start around June and shooting will run for about four months.

Grech said on Wednesday the commission is working with Paramount Pictures Studio and executive producers to ensure the shooting plan works.

"Shooting is to start in the coming months and we are hoping to have more people join the industry at large."

The production will be largely shot at Fort Ricasoli, which also served as the main setting for the original film.

Preparations at Fort Ricasoli are under way, with large scaffolding being mounted. Sources had previously said the sequel production will be on a "much bigger scale" than that for the original film.

The sequel comes 23 years after the release of Gladiator that had starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, a former general forced into becoming a gladiator under the rule of self-appointed Roman emperor Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix.

More than two decades later, "thousands" of extras are set to be engaged for the filming of the sequel. Yet, asked when and how eager recruits can apply, Grech said hundreds are already working in the sector.

"It's not just extras that are needed but also crew and all those businesses that support the film industry," he said.

Grech said that apart from Gladiator, a number of other productions will take place this year with filming taking part at the Mediterranean Film Studios and other locations, including Gozo.

The Gladiator sequel is expected to have Oscar nominees Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan among the lead roles. Mescal is expected to play Lucius, the son of Maximus lover Lucilla, as a grown man.

A-lister Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal are also expected to form part of the star-studded cast.

Paramount has set a November 2024 release for the epic.

Yeah, they seem far-fetched but then again, what do we know? :)

Paramount Studio? First one was made by DreamWorks Pictures/Universal Pictures.

Also, I didn't know there was re-release in 2022 that made $37,781,511 (more than The Last Duel ;D). According to Box Office Mojo worldwide box office is now $503,162,313. I don't know how legit is this because The Numbers doesn't include it.

It's not an error, Deadline also has it as Paramount Studios:

Quote from: DeadlineParamount Pictures has dated the film for Nov. 22, 2024.

The first film was co-production between Universal and DreamWorks, and while DreamWorks will not be involved in the sequel, Universal has the right to partner again when the project is packaged.

The Martian still made more and cost less to film. Scott should do a Martian sequel next.  ;D

To be honest he should make some standalone, like The Marian sci-fi movie. I was hoping for The Forever War but it's not gonna happen.
