Yeah, I always felt the ethics on genetic engineering/modification were very well expressed in the book; is it truly a good idea to alter the DNA of an animal (or human) just to make it more aesthetically pleasing for marketing purposes?  That sounds like a very vain reason to get into the field.

The Version 4.4 chapter in Jurassic Park is widely misinterpreted/misremembered, and that particular quote isn't from the book as far as I remember.

The whole point of the chapter was that Wu wanted to make the dinosaurs conform to what the public expected to see - make them slow, lumbering, dumb - as they'd already made safety-related hormonal and genetic manipulations to stop the dinosaurs breeding, and to kill them off if they were deprived of InGen-sourced food. But Hammond wanted authentic dinosaurs so that's more or less what they got.

It could be argued they aren't really authentic though. In brief, the environment has changed so much that the dinosaurs aren't behaving the same way they did in the Mesozoic and that they have frog DNA means they aren't "whole" dinosaurs. Their genes aren't pure.

This is extremely encouraging. There's been a lot of negativity lately.

Lol, yeah. I'm currently reading a fantastic book called Jurassic Park and Philosophy. It's a collection of short essays analyzing the film through a philosophical lens. http://www.amazon.ca/Jurassic-Park-Philosophy-Truth-Terrifying/dp/0812698479/ref=sr_1_1

My favourite piece so far is the one discussing the feathered dinosaur issue. The author talks about why the filmmakers specifically created monsters rather than dinosaurs to appease to the popular image of what dinosaurs are, yet that only reinforces the hyperreal world we choose to live in versus the real one.
