Is anyone else playing this?

No, but I've honestly been considering it, and that's really unlike me. I hate the battle royale genre, and I had no interest in the game until someone explained the ever-shrinking wall mechanic. That one thing solved pretty much every problem I had with the genre.

Corporal Hicks

Is that not a common gameplay mechanic of battle royale type games?

Not sure, but that aspect is straight from the film Battle Royale (which the game is directly based around.)

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is based off of H1Z1: King of the Kill, which suffered from a metric ton of technical issues. KotK also had the diminishing area but it was noxious gas instead of an electric field. The two games are extremely similar in concept but PUBG is a much more refined game.

No, or at least not prominent or implemented well. As Olde said, it was in the guys last game, but it's still a very recent thing. This is honestly the only game I know aside from that one that has it. Games like Day Z are really unappealing because the majority of the time nothing happens. It's a big area with a few people in it and no direction. Cool stuff can happen, but it just takes so long, and it's usually up to chance.

I've watched a few 20 minute matches of PUBG and I've seen more gameplay than I have through years of looking at the pseudogenre as a whole. It's great. Such an elegant solution.

It's not a direct adaptation of the film but that's definitely where this gameplay came from:

Worth a watch if you haven't seen it already.

Battle Royal is also an emerging genre in the same way Souls-like is, or MOBA and Roguelite once were.

Corporal Hicks

Is it really that uncommon? I immediately likened Battlegrounds to Battle Royale when I heard of it but I honestly thought the gameplay style had been done plenty of times before hand.

YEah, there's been this style of game for a few years now, but they've been spread out and usually terrible. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of them had been abandoned Early Access titles.

There's definitely an element of luck to the game. You've got an entire island (and this is just the first map) and the zone can come down anywhere. I was playing Wednesday and the game was just continually punishing me in terms of zone placement. It's when that starts to happen and you can get to the zone that it becomes frustrating. Becomes something of a walking simulator.

That said, I do really enjoy the game by and large. Had some really fun evenings on it. Especially fun in squad mode with some buddies.

Can you and your mates start turning on each other, like when there's only a few left on the map?  ;D

I heard about a match once where two players were shooting at each other's positions, and the wall began to shrink, so Guy A stayed and kept Guy B pinned because the wall would hit Guy B first, so he'd have to break cover before Guy A

You could but you win as a squad. You don't have to kill each other in squad or duo modes.

Yeah, that's not uncommon! And pretty tense situations.
