Well, biologically speaking Shoggoths are unlike anything in current fiction to be honest.
They were created by the Elder Things for menial labor, they are essentially formless plasticy, foetid monstrostities that are constantly forming and unforming orifices, limbs, eyes, and various organs. They are also pretty big, something like 15-25 meters or larger(50-100ft or more in diameter), they don't need to eat but they will digest just about anything(and get this, their digestive leavings are freaking Electrified and highly corrosive but not the same as acid) when they attack something they pull it into their semi translucent mass and "suck" it apart or they crush it.
They are apparently capable of minor speech as well(as mentioned in ATMOM).
They don't or can't reproduce by normal means, prefering to divide like amoeba if they are able(usually, they are not able).
But as for Mr.Tentacle beast, perhaps he is the progenitor(or becomes the progenitor) for the facehugger/xenomorph species.
