Considering the layout of the set, i'd say they emptied the parking lot, filled it with coal and wood chip and let it burn all night, then filled in with Grey sand, smoke generators and props, and with the right angles it'd look like Nam.

Nope, it was a location where the South Americans were demolishing jungle. It's a real site of destruction.
