Burke would never lie... ;-)
There isn't any reason for him to do so. Even the '
Isolation' game didn't spend any time trying to excuse its retcon. It just
happened without explanation.
Ripley would have
ample reason to check out what she could for herself. I don't think she'd be satisfied with a simplistic A4 obituary -
especially when she's more paranoid than ever about accepting the company's word on face value. She has every reason to try and verify it through some third party sources.
Also, note how all the non-Weyland-Yutani representatives don't raise any eyebrows. If her daughter had visited her area of space before and made headlines about some strange organism - which matches Ellen's description - it should have been noticed. Instead, everyone's just saying how nothing like it has brought up any search results.
Yeah, a story
could say Burke lied for the sake of lying, but it would look really awkward in hindsight. Would also make a mockery of his reasons for sending a couple of random prospectors out to the co-ordinates. If Amanda's story is known about, he'd have extra information to go on and would have a lot more reason to send out a specialised investigation/retrieval team. He's the/a 'Special Projects Director', after all.
