Spoiler
Yeah, it seemed to me he had a good shot of taking over with his funding proposal alone - the ploy to let the Predator out then have his CIA boys recapture it came across as unnecessary and a little contrived.

How are the new Star Wars EU books in general? Anything worth reading?

The Darth Vader comics are awesome.  The various novels are kinda meh.

But those are the old EU and no longer canon.  Like K2.

Oh I thought he just said EU, there's nothing really worthwhile in the new EU.

Lost Stars and Thrawn get a lot of praise but I ultimately found them mediocre.

I'm actually part way through AvP: Prey, from Wayyyy back when. I got the Augmented Reality Survival Guide for my birthday, and David's Drawings arrived earlier today, but I'm going on holiday Friday, so figured I'd read them then.

I thought Tarkin and Lords of the Sith were okay.  I surprisingly enjoyed the Aftermath novels too and I think they're more interesting than the actual sequel films.

I liked Lords of the Sith.

I am having trouble keeping up with the Alien/Predator EU, adding Star Wars to the mix would be quite a challenge. I have read some of the old EU stuff though.

Reading Alien: Augmented Reality Survival Manual.
Lots of small mistakes in the book but dumb fun overall.

Worth it?

The ARG stuff is pretty fun. Otherwise, it's nothing really new - https://www.avpgalaxy.net/literature/reviews/the-book-of-alien-augmented-reality-survival-manual/
