You're not wrong. I don't think the design in Aliens is bad per se, but it certainly wasn't meant to have any light pointed directly at it, to say the least.

Everything in the virtual workprint is from official sources that was available in the mid 2000s.  But I didn't use every little bit as it would not have worked.  Plus there has been more to surface since then.  Especially in the bluray

That is all unless there is other material out there that I don't know about. I remember seeing ALIENS cast interviews as bonus features on VHS video releases for ALIEN in the early/mid-90s?

Removing the dome was a mistake.

I would say it's inferior, but I'm not sure it was the wrong move. Those creatures were shrouded in darkness the whole movie, and if they had the domes on, you'd never have seen any of the ribbed detail beneath in that lighting. Plus, they didn't have anything else to hide since they took the skull design away. You get a couple pretty good glimpses of the Alien head in the first movie, but that never really happens in Aliens. They're either moving too fast, getting blown to bits, or it's too dark.

I think Resurrection commits far more egregious transgressions with the design than Cameron did.

I really like Cameron's redesign. It fits the militaristic tone of the movie. Plus I love those blades he put on the elbows.

Camerons was alright. It looked a little too rubbery, but it was alright.

Resurrection started a bad trend though. The AVP aliens looked like crap too.

I think we also gotta remember that the pièce de résistance in terms of design in Aliens was the Queen.
