That still gets me like Hicks and Newt in Alien 3. Breaks me seeing her dismembered state.

According to Fassbender in The Official Collector's Edition book, David kills Shaw because he's scared of her leaving him. So he kills her so she can never leave him.

Making Alien at its core a misguided love story.  I think that is what annoys me the most about this entire thing.  It took one of the few completely inhuman creatures in horror lore and made its origins too f**king human.

Separate from my mixed feelings about what happens in this scene, I must say that the composition of that entire sequence - David's happiness watching the Xeno birth, Walter discovering Shaw's defiled body, all while that gorgeous music is playing - really tugs at me emotionally. Reminds me of many sequences in Ridley's Hannibal where I felt similarly unsure about the content but taken by the artfulness of his direction.

This film would have been much better if Scott had spent some time with Shaw and David, as a prologue to the main event. Tie up some of the loose ends from Prom, explain some of Davids subsequent actions, explain what happened to Shaw.

Then cut out the end Alien sequence in its entirety, rewrite the back end and shorten it. Also they should have closed some of the damn plot holes.
