Hello,
I am a artist retiring from game concept art.

How ever I stick around to do little projects left and right.
And I have gotten stuck on the predator species.

A few days ago I watched a Marathon, aliens to avp to predator.
I am in love with Gigers work, but never so much with the predators concept.
Partly it's how humanoid they are, but the sizes of their heads that make them look cartoonish and out of balance
in the newer films they appear in played a big role too I'm sure.

But after taking some notes during the films and watching the predators closer I have found the lack of detailed concepts
out there and the design changes that I dislike have made me want to redesign and make detail designs of their species.

Requesting knowledge from Predator fans.

Wikipedia and googeling will get you only so far.
I will surely design my Predators in my image, how ever I would like to know what
is rule and law in the Predator species designs.

I have not been able to find much on their females,
only that several comics mention they are bigger and meaner then the males.
Fan art has simply shown human bodies with large breasts with predator heads stuck on them.

Also how the reproduce doesn't seem to be very well known. As this is a big factor in the evolution of a species,
I'd like to know what has been suggested in the passed.
I must say I found the way the Alien-predator Hybrid injected it's young in the human females very interesting,
and a very logical explanation for their mouth pieces, which simply don't seem to have much use other then make them look creepy.

I hope some people are open to help me out,
and yes I will be actually redesigning and developing my own thing around this species [culture, sub species, civilization etc],
just because I enjoy it and because I think they can do much more with Predators then they are.

Re-designing the Predator would be breaking every rule and law out there, so I think you should just take your ideas and run with them. I, for one, am interested in what you have in mind.

Carnal:
I thought as much ahaha. But fact is there has never been a set base design for them and every time a new comic is made or a new movie is developed they redesign the poor things and not always for the good of the species, to be honest from a professional point of view that is.

Design work.

Base.
I started out by looking at the base design/original design.
There are some things a miss there for animal functionality, like a full upper jaw of teeth enabling chewing or ripping meat.
So even a dweeb would be able to tell you that might need some re-thingking.
I how ever love their inner jaws so I am clambering around a bit to keep that original feel.. kinda feels like cute kitty teeth to me.

I also did a break down of their skull design, their actual face size is quite small. Just as the Alien design it feels like a human skull base and they started adding things. Which you often see in old creature designs as they had to be fitted over a human
in the movie. This doesn't cause issues but often results in very over sized cartoonish heads if the original artist hasn't
thought of the weight put on the neck and so expanded the neck and it's muscle tissue.
Unlike the horrible unrealistic designs of the avatar smurfs how ever the original design of the Predators is well done,
so no skinny neck big heads so you I got a great base to work with :'D

The big taboo

Yes it's the first I ended up tackeling after deciding the males have been lit trough quite enough in the passed,
Females.

Looking up female designs so far, we get some big titted xena's with predator heads.
But I scrapped that whole thing and went back to what evolution might do here.

I thought the way the alien predator hybrid in avp injected it's young, giving a good explanation for the predator males
mouth pieces. How ever it wouldn't be logical for females to have them then, making it a bit of a forced affair.
[Hey, years of concepting has portrayed predators as a aggressive race, them having cute cuddly sex isn't what we were expecting now is it?]

Going on on that theory Nature would probably make the males much more decorated then the females,
their big forehead plates and hair like patterns on their bodies. I also expect myself to design the bigger males with
much more color patterns that have a meaning that might only play up around some nice looking female to charm them.
So yes, I ended up making the females slightly boring.

Alos.. no bewbs. I'm sorry guys, I can't really imagine a predator breast feeding.
My designs are fetish disappointing I'm afraid.
But well, the males not having nipples I canĀ“t imagine any of you expected it anyway.
How ever I have found the concept of females overall being bigger then males, this is usually something seen in insects
and certain species of animals that live in groups. Where the other females are often workers, smaller, but they certainly are there.
So, yeah.. there are some bigger females and a whole lot of smaller ones.
They will be given a certain role in their civilization but I'm not at that stage of the project yet.

Just a normal smaller female

I promise more digital art, just short on time so I draw in my sketch book w/e I got a moment.

i like what you're doing here, they feel like predators without looking like figurines with replaced heads. However, flat and wide faces remind me too much of something else:

i suggest enlarging the eye sockets a little and reduce the bump where our nose would be to give it that menacing shadow in which you can only see the glow on their eyes, and playing with more shapes for the "lips", so the male and the female can share some common facial muscles, as nature often takes shortcuts like that. And regarding the necks, yes, they should be muscular and thick for a creature like this, but making them way too long would expose them to attacks. most animals prevent this by a) having a head structure that can block access to it(think triceratops) b) having a very loose and thick mass of skin and hair(could see the predators using the dreadlocks for this but i don't think they're that strong), or c) just having a short neck.

keep up the good work!

I have been thinking of this also for years and will be making a 3D model of a Pred female on what is known of here and the way she gives birth we can work together on this ;)

All of this is my opinion, and how I would (re)design them. If you like it, great, I am glad, and perhaps I'll write more if my ideas are well received. If not ah well, you'll have an idea of what not to do.

Biology:

On the point of females, I never understood why they would have breasts. Reptilian species, (as I imagine Predators, everyone is entitled to their interpretation) do not breast feed, so I imagine females without them.

I have read that they would be horned, larger, and more aggressive than males. Although the size and aggression makes sense evolutionarily, (i.e. bears, lions, spiders, manti) the concept undermines the power of the males to me, so I, and this is just me, imagine them smaller than males, in equal ratios to humans of the same race on average.

To continue on the reptilian matter, I would write them to be capable of switching between endo, or exothermic. Exothermic when in warm conditions, thus not needing to eat so often, and endothermic when cold, requiring more food.

Perhaps their camouflage is also partially a organic trait, like the octopus, or chameleon, but their technology enhances it.

The eyes I imaged to be vertical, like a lizard's, even though they are not it the films I believe.

I imaged two thumbs, one on each side of the palm, and their fingers/ toes would have one more digit than humans. Better for climbing.

Hide made of scales, and tough like a croc's.

Sharp claws, teeth and tusks, all made of fast growing ivory.

More ribs than humans, and two of all vital organs, except brain.

Their bodies would also adapt very quickly to changes. Their bodies begin storing fat, reinforcing bones, and building muscle within hours of  changes in environment or new patterns.

Still no full opinion on the dreads....other than they're awesome.

Carnivores.

Culture:
I believe females would be prized, and in need of impressing (one of the reasons the males hunt), and capable fighters, preforming the duties females would in hunter/gather societies. So while males hunt, waged war, defended, and governed, made tools and weapons, females would be the backbone of society, cooking, artistry, smithing, child rearing, and operating ship mechanics.
Not to say their would not be capable female warriors as well. Think, Klingons.
It would be dishonorable to not be able to defend yourself in their culture.

I always figured there would be a caste system.

Something along the lines of (males only):

Slave, Property

Commoners, they earn their food by working for a clan: ship maintenance, builders apprenticeships, or for a noble.

Specialist Artisan/ Engineer/ Makers of complex items, mostly ship parts.

NobleMan- The lowest of the NobleClass, dived again.
-Pup, Student
-UnBlooded, has hunted, but still learns

Healers

-Young Blood, Passed manhood ritual, is now a man and self reliant, can mate
-Hunter/Blooded, Matured blooded

Shaman, Spiritual guides

Warrior, the next NobleClass, hunt less for sport and trophies, instead tend to clan matters, fighting other clans, and enacting Elder orders.

Elder, final NobleClass, must complete a second Hard Meat ritual, (one where they have a chest burster implanted within them, surgically removed, and then they face it)  and now, as one, or with a council, govern the tribe.

Within the same caste, older means higher rank.

Females:

Slave

Commoner

Specialist Artisan/ Engineer/ Makers of complex items, mostly ship parts.

Prostitute

Nobles

Shaman, Spiritual guides

Polytheistic.

Children are reared by both parents, or abandoned if not in the noble class. Your parents class determines your class.

Below only applies to Nobles:

There is no such thing as a slut in Predators, unless you sleep with someone unworthy of you.

The culture is very sexual, Grecian levels.

After impressing a female, a youngblood+ male will be allowed to mate with her.

If the child is female, the male will appear in the child's life, but not rear her, or have a stake in her life. She will live and learn with the mother until she is an adult.

If the child is a male, the Father will be present, same as a daughter, but will take the child when he is equivalent to & in humans.

If the Father dies honorably, the child rearing is then the responsibility of one of the Father's hunt brothers. (Always in groups of three, Chopper, Celtic, Scar. Or Berserker, Falconer, Tracker)

If the Father dies dishonorably, the child is abandoned.

If it is born sickly, it is abandoned, or discarded.

Male are reared very spartan. He is taught, and trained, by his Father until he passes the hard meat trial.

All equipment/ weapons before the completion of a youngblood trial, are hand made by the user.

Currency exists

Tribes war, and align.

All I have for now.

I'm loving these sketches. The female preds especially, while I have nothing against the usual "Predator with breasts" design in most fan art, yours seem more realistic (in terms of the fact that they're aliens). Yet they still have that feminine quality about them. Great work!

Rich Green Acid Blood

I'm digging them, too. Very sexual yet still creaturely (if that's a word). I was wondering, do you think you could whip up some sort of Predator land vehicle? Thought that'd be a cool concept.

I like this. Feminine and monstruous. The eyes in the female predators arent quite right though.... they need to be more malevolent.

keep doing what you do..  'cause you are doing it right.

I actually kinda like the idea of the female looking significantly different than the male, it makes the species a bit more interesting.  This makes me want to explore what the females predators would be like in my own work, but I'm afraid that I'll always put breasts on them- that's just how I roll.

Wish she stayed, I would've liked to have seen more of her work, I think she's onto something.

Well it sure is interesting and I'm all for redesigning things or have a different views of a certain themes.
And I get the whole willing to change and better things!

But dissing the man who designed one of the best and most respected franchises out there. Is another thing! Note that Predator is designed by Stan Winston on a plane flight. With a few pointers by Jim Cameron. While they where shooting the movie already.

These are some of the most respected men in the industry. So telling that they missed the whole point is some big shoes to fill. The whole design for the AVP series is bull, I'll give you that.

On a note on your social structure of the female Predators (also called Yauntja) it is not new at all.
These are some of the social structures used in some South American tribes.
Perhaps they don't have a social structure and they are just for breeding.

I like the idea of them having no breasts and belly buttons they are not human indeed.

Good luck! It sure as hell has to be better than some pencil sketches.

one thought i had was that in some of the liturature the dreads is a very painful process the warriors go through, and if you showed pain it was started over.
in this case i dont belive the females would have the dreads.
