Because he's fighting a giant atomic fire breathing god. It's a hard sell, so they have to trick people into thinking he actually has a chance. Which, thanks to plot armor, he does.

I thought there was quite a bit of humor in KOTM. It was all terribly cringey and forced, but it was there.
