Quote from: St_Eddie on Apr 14, 2024, 07:54:44 AMIt seems folk here don't understand the nature of crowdfunding. $50 is not the cost of a digital download.  It's the cost to support the project and recieve a digital download, digital soundtrack and your name in the documentary's credits.
And if they'd framed it as that without the "think of it as proof of your devotion" horseshit, great! Instead they decided to throw in some cringey fan gatekeeping nonsense.

English isn't my main language, I will try to rephrase that "2-3" anecdotes thing.
Theres a about 2-3 details shared in Aliens Expanded that are about the same level as "the speargun is still under the Narcissus door", if you look hard enough. I think that kind of stuff is really cool, especially if not shared previously.

Not an anecdote in the line of "this and that happened while making the scene", but there's a lot of that as well.

Theres a certain Reddit thread where people are going apeshit with negativism about this, but then its Reddit.

Is that really all this thing has to offer?

BigDaddyJohn

Yep still not worth it.

SM

It's never been worth it from the outset.

I'm sure some of the interviews are nice and fun but the film has been extensively documented already.

I'm sure I'll catch it on Shudder in a year or two.

One the pledging period is over, they will no doubt sell digital copies of the documentary for a more standard rate.  Y'all new to crowdfunding or something?
The pledging period was over 18 months ago, this is a second round of preorders that's pure profit for the filmmakers. Buying in now is like buying a ticket to a 45th anniversary showing of 'Alien' - you aren't "producing" anything, it's already been produced.

According to the CEO, this preorder period is the only time you can get it (although he said the same thing 18 months ago for the initial funding). So unless he's a filthy liar preying on false FOMO, then no you won't be able to get it later at a discounted rate.

Yeah, I made that thread.

This is sounding less and less appealing as more info comes out. $50 for a few bits of info that I most definitely will probably be able to read online the day this thing drops is not worth it for me. Even if my name would be in the credits with Cameron. I've literally been to the guy's studio, even stood in his parking spot. I don't personally need that, and I don't like the insinuation that the size of my wallet is related to how big of a fan I am.

From the little bits I've seen them post on social media lately solidified that too, I don't mind talking heads, but the moment I saw some of the other fan sites pop into the discussion in these videos, I felt an immediate cringe. They should have had Aaron and or Adam on. Most of those sites get their info from here anyways.

New ALIENS stuff is always exciting, but this just feels like a cash grab and vanity project. Especially with the funding being locked in almost 2 years ago. They could easily do a lower tiered version without the name in the credits thing, but they are giving a false sense of a digital scarcity, which is no different than an NFT to me.

SiL

And I'm still not sure who this thing is aimed at.

Is it for the super fans, who know it already? Casual fans, who might actually learn something but wouldn't be interested in $50 for a download?

Mike’s Monsters

Do they actually want people to watch the thing?

They want people to pay for it.

Only if you're a super fan who coughs up the bucks.  Or just coughs up the bucks.

Local Trouble

But it has Alien Theory though.

BigDaddyJohn

I deplore a lack of Mr H though.

If anything, that's a minor selling point for me...

Hey, hey. Like why bother watching this when we already have "Superior Firepower"? That I do own thanks to the more affordable anthology box set.

Well, it was affordable when I bought it.
