I'm a person that does (kinda) like Blomkamp. I'm definitely rooting for him, at least. Not this project, though. Nothing about his Alien movie, from what we had seen, was grabbing me at all. District 9 is very good, and I like Chappie more than most people do. Elysium is a mess (both structurally and in what it is trying to say), but it looks great and there's vision there. I followed all of his Oats stuff (I liked some of those shorts more than I did others, but for the most part, it was all at least interesting in what it was striving for, even if it was a bit half baked), I watched Demonic (it was dire), and I really can't be assed to check out Gran Turismo. But hey, I'm still rooting for the guy. I want to see him take another big swing on a sci-fi project and do something genuinely cool with it. I hope he has it in him.
But yeah, his Alien project just... was never doing it for me. He probably would have been a better fit for the Robocop movie that he got booted off of, though really, I'd rather just see him do something original again.
I'm very happy we got the Gothic horror stab at the franchise from Scott in Covenant over what Blomkamp was trying to get made.
