Why did Alien3 steal from The Thing? (Read 4,449 times)

Haven't seen The Thing, but that had the first alien monster to take some attributes from it's host when it was full grown. Why did Alien3 have to steal that idea? If Aliens didn't take attributes it would have saved a heck of a lot of fan arguements (eg PredAlien design etc). I guess it's kinda creepy the whole 'take-from-your-host' vibe, but it still stole from another sci-fi horror.  :-\

The Thing mimics, Aliens steal...
The Thing looks talks acts like whatever it takes over
Alien doesn't...
also i bet its not the first one to do that
in the long run...doesn't really matter both are great movies

It didn't.  It fleshed out an original Alien concept from 1979.

They were a bit reluctant to have it come from a dog fue to similarities with the Thing, but it didn't steal from that movie.

The Necronoir

If you're going to assert a link with another movie, especially if you're viewing it negatively, it might have been a good idea to actually see that other movie. In any case, I hope you do because The Thing is a great movie.

And to answer your question, no, I think it was a great addition. It introduced a solid, scientifically plausible reason for why the alien was so adaptable, and therefore posed such a threat. Having the ability to steal thousands or even millions of years of evolutionary specialisation in a single generation, while simultaneously accounting for evolutionary weaknesses with their own inherent traits makes the potential for the alien species virtually limitless.

The Chibi Kiriyama

This was an idea that Ridley formed way beforehand, and it's not like Alien was completely original- Dan O'Bannon admits that he "stole" from other films in forming the script.

I like it how xenos get traits from their hosts in some way or another. Without this concept the alien biology and lifecycle wouldn't be as complex and wouldn't have the depth it does today.

I personally thought the Dog-Alien was a great addition to the franchise.

What this fella and SM said. Didn't he say it in the commentary on the original Legacy boxset?

alien 3 was and still is my favorite film. i guess it does have something to do with me that this was infact the very first alien movie i have ever seen, BUT i still love the idea. Thats what makes alien unique, and for most the design from a3 looks THE BEST imo. i like the design where it's somewhere inbetween beastie looking and biomecahnical. thats what an alien should look like.

if i was to direct an alien movie and remake it, i'd probably make the creatures look like the alien from a3.  8)

I don't think they stole it from the Thing, maybe they got the inspiration from it. After the first alien movie was influence by "The Thing from Another World (1951)" :).

Aliens and the thing are two totally different uh, things, lol.
I rather bump into The Thing than an Alien, sure you're dead either way, but anything is preferrable than having a creature tear itself from inside the gut..no thanks.

I wouldn't want to be fully taken over by an alien organism.

me neither. Just the way they kill you, I rather go the least painful way..lol.
So, how exactly did the Thing kill people after they were taken over?
We're talking Carpenters Thing, right?
