In this day and age they could absolutely use special effects to achieve it.

Look at the Hobbits in The Lord of the Rings.

The forced perspective techniques they used on LotR only works up to a certain scale after which it just looks fake as f*ck. Perhaps if they used Ian Whyte (or an even bigger guy) in conjunction with kids in suits (ala Alien) they might have pulled it off successfully.
