Big 9/10

I just lost my afternoon to this film.

I just watched a movie where Snake Plissken plays an ex-agent of some kind who moves to a new town. It doesn't take long before trouble finds him and his friends, Ghost Rider and Batman, in the shape of the villainous Corporal Hicks. I assume that Hicks is the leader of a gang of supervillains, because Sandman is in it as well. The movie ends with Batman shooting Hicks in the head (Justice!) and Plissken hooking up with one of the Desperate Housewives.

The Thing (2011)

'Sokay. Less suspenseful and more in yer face than the Carpenter sequel, but still entertaining enough; plus I loved the attention to detail they put into bridging the two films.

Insert obligatory "disappointing reliance on CGI" remark here. And so many beards! I had trouble telling most of the characters apart.

Well yeah, that's right, it's just a shame they all blurred into one hairy Norwegian mass.

John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

This movie is so goddamn awesome. Carpenter perfectly balances comedy, action/adventure and fantasy in this little 80s gem. Is it hammy at times, yeah? But that's what makes it fun. Kurt Russell was in full mullet mode as Jack Burton whilst he took on the forces of evil in Chinatown. Not to mention Kim Cattrall looked gorgeous. And I loved The Three Storms. Raiden from Mortal Kombat was heavily influenced by these guys.

007 - Goldfinger - 10/10

Don't worry, this is not me attempting a hostile takeover of First Bloods Bond reviews. I'm not going to review the film (it's a masterpiece, the essential Bond film) - I just have to mention Danish channel DR showing all the Bond films, one each week, in glorious restored HD. This weekend it was Goldfinger. Just gorgeous picture quality. Perfect skin tones. Rich and vibrant color shades, inky blacks and not a trace of dirt or imperfections. Every little detail in Connery's weathered face clearly visible in close ups.

As it happens, sister channel DR HD is showing all the Star Wars films in HD as well right now. I'd read that Episode I had issues with the blu-ray release, picture-wise. However, I never imagined that the film looked this bad. Faces are a scrubbed blur, their skin texture looking rubber-like. Unf**cking believable - a high profile film made in the late 90s, restored in HD to look like this, by the company that brought us the THX standards. I'll say this in conclusion -

Goldfinger looks like it was restored by Michelangelo in his perfectly lit studio.
The Phantom Menace looks like it was restored by a gremlin with a crayon.

I am glad you enjoyed Goldfinger. One of the best in the bunch, no doubt. Are you looking forward to Skyfall? :)

I should get to watching those again. Up next is Diamonds Are Forever -- and I loath that movie so much, I may just skip it.

It's.... not good. Not even going to make a reaction gif for that one. I guess you have to take a bullet for the team. I enjoy reading your thoughts on all the Bond films  :)

Lockout 7/10

Really enjoyed it, Guy Pearce was awesome and the one liners were funny, let down by a few dodgy effects and a rushed ending

I tried to watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), but there was just too much gross shit and bodily fluids for my taste. Jessica Biel did look ridiculously good in those jeans and tank top however.

Argo (2012)

I just got back from this and thought it was outstanding. Ben Affleck has transitioned into directing fairly well. With such acclaimed films as Gone Baby Gone and The Town; here he proves once again why he has such a talent for it. Affleck plays Tony Mendez, a CIA specialist who's used to getting people out of tight situations. Mendez along with Hollywood forms an extraction plan. They develop a fake movie called Argo. Along with a fake script, fake poster and fake cover identification for 6 Americans hiding at the Canadian Ambassador's house; with the goal being to have these people 'play' to their cover and escape Tehran. There were pretty solid performances all around. Both Affleck and Cranston were great. As was John Goodman and Alan Arkin. The actors playing to six Americans also did a decent job as well. The tension was nail biting, particularly during the airport scene in the last act.

Masters of the Universe (1987)

A fine slice of 80s cheese that tastes so damn good. Frank Langella as Skeletor steals the show. I am gonna go out on a limb and say he's right up there with Darth Vader. Underappreciated? That's for sure. For shame we never got any more sequels.

"I, Skeletor, am Master of the Universe!"
