It's only bad compared to Giger's design.

When viewed in isolation and with further development you could end up with a decent monster for an unrelated flick.

It could look good in a fantasy movie of some sorts. Same goes for the original Predator design, just make a few corrections. But it sure as hell doesn't belong to a super-detailed, realistic, sci-fi/horror movie.

Agreed.  His Alien artwork is so detailed and completely unique.  It is some of the most gripping and outstanding art that has ever been made.  There is not much of anything that even comes close as far as complete and total originality and creativity.

from the book they in the early eighties,The Making Of Alien.
