That was the intent to account for the three mounds in The Robotech Masters, but it wound up being pointless since they never bothered to state it outright.

The comic version actually shows the SDF-2 standing back-to-back in the lake with the SDF-1, but the original animation doesn't because the Macross version of the SDF-2 was being constructed on the moon at that time.

The mounds were only vaguely referred to as "the remains of the old battlefortress" or something to that effect.  No specific mention of the SDF-2 (or Khyron's ship) at all.

The SDF-2 was scrapped after the Khyron attack and they never really explained how it magically appeared behind SDF-1. Oh but I'm sure you nerds will figure it out for me.
