The atmosphere, the feeling that anything could come at you at any time, mainly due to the nicely implemented random spawning and enemy AI. Not to mention my heart pounds everytime I hear that motion sensor beeping away while my flare is slowly dimming.

Oh well that never scared me. I would say the game surprises you more than scares you. I would get "surprised" when i would go around a corner on gateway and the predator would be right there walking toward the door i was standing in.
