The head-rest sucked and I adore every other aspect of H.R Giger's Alien.

I particularly like the single row of spines running the (top & underside) length of the appendage. The spines tie in nicely with the elbow & (c)ankle spikes.

I also believe the head-rest spines connect rather neatly to the earlier, unused Facehugger design:

What about the tubes?  How can you tolerate such an omission?

Easily, the rib cage is much larger and it emerged from an animal.

Why should that matter vis-à-vis the tubes?

 It's "a f**king alien" after-all.
We don't know the function of each back protrusion, their functionality is obviously integrated somehow regardless, because of the animal host. My opinion is that's the reason for the larger ribcage because of the quadrupedal host.
