I was really surprised by this news.  I've not seen him in much, but there's no denying he was fantastic in Blade Runner and I loved him as Ash in Out of the Shadows.

Rutger Hauer was a class act. Acting in movies with established directors like Paul Verhoeven, Ridley Scott, Robert Rodriguez and Christopher Nolan, but also helping out first time directors or old friends.

You should check out the version of The Hitcher with him in. He's amazingly creepy in it.

I saw "The Hitcher" years ago... it scared / creeped me out then.  I've never watched it since. I'll have to add it to my golden oldies must watch list.
