Did they ever explain what the pipes on the back of an alien are for ? ( anatomically, what the purpose is )

I'm truly impressed! That's what the Predalien should have looked like... I can even accept the dreads since the rest of the alien is true to the original Alien design. Even with the dreads I would say that's the best Predalien design I have seen so far.
