Is Twin Peaks worth watching? I was thinking of getting the DVD.
Yes.
Throughout the first half or two-thirds of the show, it was a compelling mixture of a tongue-in-cheek satire on '80s American soap dramas (such as Dynasty), and the kind of surreal, mind-bending darkness of a David Lynch film. It could often be very funny, genuinely moving, atmospheric and sometimes shocking. Combined with an
amazing soundtrack, it was a brilliant show, and that period still stands up very well today.
At that point though, right after the climax of the main storyline, the Lynchian element
disappears completely, leaving the satire to stand on its own. They also introduce a new villain who isn't particularly convincing. Right at the end of the show's life, the Lynchian element suddenly reappears, but it's too late and a bit
too Lynchian in my opinion. If you want a decent ending though, the prequel movie Fire Walk With Me fills in plenty of blanks and in my opinion stands as the finest of Lynch's films.
