I think the sorce in the first alien movie is the best IMO next to Alien 3.

I think it works in context with the film - Brett's death, Lambert/Parker death. But as a stand alone soundtrack, it just doesn't. And that's where the other films soundtracks are better than it. I can sit on the bus and just listen to A3 or Res.

I can't remember any music from any of the Alien movies.
If John Williams did it, I would probably remember all of it. 

Wow. . . Yeah, that's true.  John Williams makes all movies more enjoyable with his emotional and amazing themes for each of his characters and scenes.
