He kinda forgot about a helluva lot more.
But anyway, it's all been said already about that film.

GL didn't forget about a solid character arc or adhering to an established ruleset, or generally how to make a good entertaining flick until 1999.
I don't think the Sith existed until 1999-ish as a concept onscreen anyway, that you could retroactively apply to the OG Trilogy.

Lucas created it for the original film and practically every promotional photo of Darth Vader at the time referred to him as the 'Dark Lord of the Sith'.

Interesting fact: the Noghri in 'Heir to the Empire' were going to be the Sith (whom Vader was the lord of) but Lucasfilm told Zahn "no, change that name, we're gonna do something with the Sith..."

Aye, Darth Vader was always advertised as Sith as far as I know.

Vader was called the Dark Lord of the Sith since the beginning and was even referred to as such by other characters in the old Marvel comics. However, who the Sith actually were was never explored until many years later when Dark Horse started publishing stories about them during the ancient days of the Old Republic. 

Even then, it wasn't until TPM that Palpatine himself was retconned as a Dark Lord of the Sith as well (and Darth became a title).
