Predator movies racist? (Read 15,239 times)

I remember hearing that Ebert's review called Predator 2 racist.  Just today my film teacher mentioned he thought that the Predator in #1 was racist enough, but having it in the ghetto in part 2 was even more racist.  Thoughts?

First of all, how did you and your teacher bring up Predator?  Second, what were his main points of argument in calling the Predator racist?

Probably if it didn't have dreadlocks they'd have nothing to say.  Neither of them probably know the thing's played by a black guy either.

This thread is retarded.

Can it be locked, please?

Calling something retarded is always a good way to win an argument.  And I seriously do want to hear what everyone has to say from their own point of view.

I think my teacher pretty much thinks the Predator just looks to ethnic not to be racist in some way.  A black guy killing it in Predator 2 would nullify his anyway though.  I didn't really expect anyone on here to say it was racist.

Its kind of funny, people's reaction to this...when I posted this at AXP, everyone thought it was ridiculous as well or made fun of Ebert.

I would be curious to know why your teacher thinks the first one is...I can kind of see it in the second one, but don't see how any connection to racism can be made in the 1st one.

I think he might just have seen it once he saw Predator 2.  Like, looked back and thought "oh, there's a little bit back there too".  Of course, as I said:  If the Predator had no dreadlocks then no one would have anything to say.  PC should have no bearing on movie creature designs within reasonable boundaries.  I'd say the Predator is pretty reasonable.  I don't see any racism connections in either movie because there are no intended connections to be made.  And if it's not intended, then I'm not going to bust the movie's balls pointing it out.

Meh, people who make these kinds of connections constantly have racism on their mind.

I've heard this argument before, but I didn't hear anybody bring it up until the second one came out.  Putting the Predator in that movie next to some Jamaicans probably made him seem awfully "rasta," what with the dreads and everything.  I think it might just be the movie itself, which pits two nationalities as maniacal street gangs, that rubs people the wrong way - although I think those people aren't giving enough credit to the fact that the "good guys" include a black man and two latinos, you know?

Hey! How come all the white guys are portrayed as cold blooded killers with no sense of moral obligation!  They even mowed down a bunch of hispanics!  I'm not a right wing lunatic who thinks mexicans should stay in their country!  Yet every white man we see is portrayed as such!  Even the black guys are portrayed as Uncle Tom's!  This movie is racist against white man and is purposedly trying to suggest we are like Nazi's or any other socialist power!

^sarcasm.

There was a show called black and white where the guys would dress up as the opposite race.  The black guy was leading the white guy (disguised as a black dude) down a busy street.  People were stepping out of the way.

Black dude: See all these white people stepping out of the way?  They are afraid of me because I'm black, they are racist!

White dude: Dude were taking up the whole walkway.

If you look for racism, you'll find it.

Predator isn't racist because the predator has dreads.  It was inspired by an african tribe, but I don't think inspiration automatically means "geez, lets make the predator gangsta so all the little white guys are afraid of it."  Despite it being set in the eighties, some left wing group could look at predator and say, "Predator is a movie about right wing conservatism vs left wing politics,", but since immigration wasn't the "problem" it was back then, I doubt very much that is the case.

It is what it is.  I sometimes wonder how many peoples books get taken and misconstrued over the course of time and portrayed as something they didn't mean, or never intended.

I very much doubt that the predator films are racist.  The racism tag is slapped onto everything nowadays so quickly its ridiculous.  The show the boondocks was almost railroaded off the network it showed on originally because people thought it was racist, when the guy writing it was a black man reflecting on the pitfalls of gangsta and problack lifestyles.

I know racism exist, I've experienced it both ways.  I've been there when black people are yelled at for looking at magazines in stores "you gotta pay for that first!" when half a dozen white people are doing the same, and when the black guys pick on the lone white kid riding his bike home from school, "We don't want cracka's around here!"

But that doesn't mean a movie made by white men is intended to be racist just because it features black actors. Sometimes directors just want to make a movie, they don't want to put any type of emphasis behind the story.  Aside from that KPH seemed to get along with everyone well.  I doubt he's just mugging for the camera.  He was a big STRONG dude.  He isn't going to take shit from racist, just like arnold in red heat, or any other warm blooded man.

I'd say if a white person killed the Predator in both movies, it may have a touch of it.  But in the first movie the Predator kills himself and a black person kills him at the end of 2.

The Ultimate Predator

Oh come on, this really is ridiculous, I can't see in the slightest how either of the movies were racist, what an absolute load of bollocks. Give me some straight-up evidence.
