Each of those little specks of light is a galaxy. Billions upon billions of stars, untold numbers of planets, perhaps unimaginable living beings living out their lives, just like us... all of that in one speck of light. And that hundreds of thousands of times over -- without ever meeting each other.

No. The APOD site's pictures are almost entirely in high enough quality for use as a desktop.
