He's definitely nuts shooting there in August though. I visited the Dead Sea area which borders the Wadi Rum many, many years ago during late summer.

Won't be making that mistake again.

My favorite scene of THE MARTIAN was shooted in Wadi Rum in the summer. When Matt Damon is Crossing Mars. Obviously, the scene was a little changed with CGIs.
