Its stated in the film more or less as well. When Kane volunteers to be one of the first to the ship, Dallas says "figures" as if this is something Kane has done before in some fashion.

correct. There are also similar situations in Covenant and Prometheus that could be attributed to excessive enthusiasm, but they often seem stupid or embarrassing.
For me, the scenes in which the character's departure was prepared were too careless.
When Ledward goes off to smoke a fag, it seems kind of uninspired.
It might have been interesting if a small but harmless shock effect had been included here:
-when Karine takes the water sample
A small creature could have jumped out of the water and she was so frightened that she threw the syringe into the air.
But the creature is harmless and disappears again.
They both laugh and Ledward goes to bring the syringe back to her. Only then does he accidentally step on the spore sacs on the ground. Same with Hallet. Instead of pressing his prong almost directly into the spore sacs like an idiot, he could have simply tripped and broken the things open and become infected.
It would have been possible to make everything seem a little less embarrassing without a lot of effort.

Kane sticking his whole face in the egg was more over the top then either of those examples I reckon.  And Kane sticking his whole face in the egg never bothered me.

The only bit I found egregiously dumb in Covenant was Oram leering over the egg just because David told him to, when only moments before David had shown he was less than sane of mind and probably had ulterior motives. To then have Oram decide, "Yeah, nah, you're probably trustworthy," came off as totally illogical.

Other things people regularly pick on, like Faris losing her shit on the lander, seemed pretty fair to me given what was going on at the time.

Prometheus was much worse in the dumbness stakes imo.

Oram is the dumbest character beat in the franchise.

Kane's a good top five though.

Faris going in and out the med bay and slipping on the blood was just missing the Benny Hill music.

Kane was dumb, the key difference for me is he felt believable as a character. The film sets him up as more hung-ho than his crewmates with little bits of dialogue, and nothing up until him getting nailed really says the eggs are lethal. OK, the Jockey is dead, but there's no obvious immediate threat. What he does comes across as curiosity getting the better of him.

What Oram does comes across as just facepalm stupid.

I mean there's a reason I said Oram is #1.

My head canon always told me that ovomorphs attract prey by use of some sort of pheromone release (possibly observed when Kane goes to touch it and fluid can be seen dripping upwards/backwards). It may be the case that potential hosts are drawn to peer into the egg without even realising their behaviour is unsafe, beyond being 'lost in the moment.'

Here is an example of this in the real world; a species of spider that releases pheromones that attract prey (in this particular case by mimicking sex cues) - the spider is capable of modifying the pheromone to adapt to different prey species; https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=pheromone+attracts+prey&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&t=1715682284250&u=%23p%3DrcBIe0Wp9PQJ

And in the interest of being critical of my own hypothesis (as I'm sure someone will point it out), yes, Kane is wearing a space suit, however he physically touches the egg, and we hear noise of a 'release' - I'm happy to accept that a creature that can bleed acid and burn through the hull of a ship, is capable of penetrating a protective glove upon contact. 😊

Yep.
Prometheus had the scientist continually try to touch a hissing organisim that even did what cobras did when hostile and unfolded their hood.

yes, interesting.
I'm just wondering what it was like for Oram, because he was already stupid before.
What pheromones did he inhale?
Could it be that...
Spoiler
...an egg was under the floor ???
[close]
yawn... ;D

Yeah, I'm not even gonna attempt to defend Prometheus 🤣 I love the movie enough to watch it regularly, but I can enjoy it whilst acknowledging the writing is complete and utter shyte. 🤣

(Moreover, having just binged 'Constellation' series one on appleTV, it made it clear to me how wasted Noomi Rapace was.. she would have been a good choice for an actual 'Alien' movie.. her acting skills weren't utilised for the role of Shaw at all..)

If Milburn was a mad Straya c**t I wouldn't have had a problem with it.
