QuoteBut mate, you think everything is far right wing everything!
Left (wing) and right (wing) are ACTUAL political labels and directions on the political spectrum, and people actually apply to them and to what they entail.
PC (Political Correctness) on the other hand is a mangled and by now hollow term solely used to ridicule and heckle. As soon as someone question your intolerant views you can swiftly label that person as PC and undertake the role as the victim (the victim of not being allowed to behave an insensitive bigoted asshole in public that is). Nobody would really identify themselves as PC or say that they are straight up PC as PC only has negative connotations, it's NOT a neutral term.
QuoteYou say you didn't support the students and they messed up, but only in not engaging this bloke in conversation, just so they could knock him down.
He is a well-known propaganda guy and ideologue. He knows that people know who he is and what he stands for. To be asked rough questions and heated debating during the Q&A should not be a surprise to him.
I never promoted interrupting his speech or anything like that. Let him speak and let there be a debate afterwards. I'm sure his ideological peers in the crowd will cheer for him and back him up.
QuoteIn other words you simply want to support a negative aspect without considering that it might not be negative. Just like these students automatically assumed this talk would be negative.
Ben Shapiro is not a neutral character, he is more or less a public figure very vocal about his political standing. He is heavily opinionated and thus people will be heavily opinionated about him. It shouldn't be a shocker.
If, let's say, Arianna Huffington was invited to a conservative leaning college, I'm sure she would grilled during the question segment as well.
The difference is that those kind of schools never invite.
QuoteYou don't really acknowledge the dreadful, spoilt, entitled behaviour that bordered on violence, by these students. That's not 'messing up', that's a serious act of oppression/tyranny/terror etc...basically, stopping many other students and profs that wanted to listen to the talker.
What is there to talk about? It's obvious that what they did was not ok. But I'm not gonna sit here and lament it with you guys while you're trying to build this hollow case. Again, downright disingenuous and falsely compassionate of you.
QuoteA serious issue across America right now which could well end up in tears at this rate.
No bigger issue now than earlier. The difference is that some people on the left (mostly kids) have become more aggressive, confrontative and loud as they have learned from the best (the right). Conservatives in this country have muffled and persecuted people without consequences forever. I'm not saying that this kind of behavior is ok and that it should be condoned, but I'm not surprised. It's sad. What's even sadder is how these isolated cases are portrayed as the norm, as if they are significant.
QuoteI might add that reading this one professors tweets, I can't believe she is still employed at this uni, she's virtually an extremist! Calling all students to protest and calling for the Presidents job etc...and she's supposed to be setting an example to the students!
Yes, teachers and professors should always try to be neutral and never push their views on the kids. They should promote critical thinking and constructive discussions and discourses. You are entitled your own view and opinion as a teacher, but keep it clear that it is of no importance in the classroom or at school in general.
As an anecdote, one of my economics teachers in high-school was a Laissez Faire right-wing Libertarian and was kind of in your face about it and wanted us all to read "Fountain Head", almost as if it was mandatory. Needless to say he had to quit as he overstepped his boundaries countless times. I remember that that the Libertarian students protested and since they were many in my school for some reason they were strong and loud and they dominated the discussions. I think a lot of people joined them because of their vocal pro-pot stance. Literal gateway drug to the rest if the ideology one might say. The liberals at my school were wusses - they did not stand up for our art teacher who came out as gay. When it later on showed up that he was a socialist too, people used that to get him transferred, even though he never pushed his views on any of us. Now this was in the 90s mind you.
