I really like the Queen's design and think she fits perfectly well with the Alien mythos.

The Queen fouled it up IMHO, just in the way that you said; there is no threat. A single alien becomes a snarling, drooling 'eat-my-shotgun' joke. You can have whole armies of them, and they still suck. The Queen is a brilliant movie monster, but the original alien is more than just a monster; it's a nightmare... we were never meant to understand it, and never meant to be able to kill it.

The fear factor in ALIENS owes so much to what the original film created; that unimaginable horror that would occur if an alien ever got its claws into you (poor dear Lambert). But ALIENS dumbed that down... I remember the first time I saw the sequel being properly thrilled but ultimately disappointed that all of the victims were neatly gathered up and cocooned to make for more aliens, to capture more humans, to make more aliens, to capture more humans... all for a giant Queen alien that Ripley could of one-shotted if she had only aimed her grenade launcher a bit to the left.

There is a better story here, one that has needed to be told for a long time. Prometheus isn't just an ALIEN film, it is the ALIEN film.

I always liked the idea that the creature was absolutely adaptable to any form of breeding or being - thus the queen system is just something that suited them in that scenario, but the egg morphing could just as easily happen if the creature so chose to. It's an aLien, why not have every conceived form of their being as 'canon'? Surely there's nothing that says that that cannot be. I'd like to see them opened up in such a way that revealed what the original trilogy (there is still no 4th film. hush.) displayed is only 30% of what the creature is about. Have them be pure nightmare fuel!

the original alien is more than just a monster; it's a nightmare... we were never meant to understand it, and never meant to be able to kill it.

An odd claim to make, considering that in every script, storyboard, and even in the final film ... the Alien is expelled and killed. O'Bannon himself laughed at the idea of an indestructible Alien, which is why he resorted to giving it acidic blood - to dissuade you from trying. You could do it, but, be aware and all that. As for trying to understand it, it had plenty of backstory originally; it was serendipity that forced the film-makers to cut it all out. Ridley once said he was disappointed that there was no prognosis/origin scenes for the Alien. He then added that if he were to do Alien 2 [he said this in 1984, before Aliens' release], he would add such a prognosis scene. I guess we're getting it with Prometheus.
