You have to make sure the background you are using is transparent in Photoshop. You recieve the option when you choose a New file and it is under 'Background Contents'. You then will have a background that will look like a checkers board.Then you can cut away anything that is surrounding the desired object. When you finish and save to web, make sure you are saving the image as a PNG-24.

You can use transparency on gimp though its a lot harder.
