The highly controversial Alien Harvest script was in fact a legit very early draft, although not a shooting script. Ridley liked the ideas he found in it (most likely terraforming and time-dilation, concepts he mentioned previously) and saw many elements that could evolve on their own and into a stand alone film.
For all intents and purposes, this is a prequel that has outgrown the Alien name, set in the same universe, created by Giger and Scott. Anyone else stoked as much as I am?
