I'm listening to the audiobook of Resurrection and I don't know why.

Hope's narration makes it tolerable, and even a little enjoyable.

But there are certain parts you should never listen to while eating.

You're talking about the novelization? I thought Resurrection was the best of the first four movies by a long shot.

I've gotten further into it since writing that.

Haven't read or listened to the Alien 3 one yet, but I'm starting to like the Resurrection novel alongside the first two, maybe even more so. The silliness of the movie is there, but feels . . . more muted, if that's the correct term. I like the way Crispin gets in the heads of the characters.

Spoiler
And I have yet to read Cold Forge and Phalanx. I've had Cold Forge for two weeks and haven't picked it up yet.

Don't tell Hicks.

I'm partway through Phalanx right now. It's an interesting take.

I'm with Hudson, I think Resurrection's the best of the original novelisations. It's still based on the weakest film of the four and unavoidably suffers from a lot of the same problems, but Crispin really did a wonderful job with it.

For sure. The novel is much better than the film IMHO as it doesn't suffer from the acting or the visuals. Not perfect still, but a better experience for me.

That's as bad as not opening your Anthology.

If Gorman read Cold Forge, maybe I could be moved a little faster on it, haha.

Exactly! I loved how so many of the characters had their time in the limelight and they all felt very well developed. I also loved the in-depth Purvis backstory that carried through. However, I do think the later parts of the book suffer from the exact same stuff the movie does for me: Lack of interesting characters and I still hate the Newborn. Although I can't remember exactly what was different about the Newborn in the book now that I think about it.

Alien 3 might be the weakest of Foster's original three in some ways, but in other ways I don't mind it. I like that it's a quick, short read, but the ending sequence unfolds in very few pages, like ten pages. Peter Guinness's reading of it is pretty damn good though. He conjures Brian Glover.

I love the opening stuff in ADF's Alien 3, but it totally falls off towards the end. It's not that the final act is badly written, it's that it feels completely passionless. You can really tell he was sick of the assignment by then

Forgot to mention that I gave Rematch another look after reading Turnabout. It's OK, but the way it gets into the Predators' heads in typical Perry fashion puts it quite a few rungs lower down for me. I much preferred the way you never hear from them in Turnabout, it made them seem far more unknowable and threatening. Thinking about it, they were barely in the novel, yet their presence was constantly felt. They were just some terrible force lurking in the trees.

It seemed like in Rematch he was going for a parallel between Sloan & his GF (forget character's name) and the two Predator characters, but yeah the stylistic departure made it feel less seamless in terms of connection to the book. I liked Rematch but the antagonistic human characters being meth-cooks wasn't all that interesting. The bad guy in the book feels pretty dangerous by comparison.

Casino wasn't fully grabbing me, so I shifted over to The Island of Doctor Moreau. H.G. Wells has a direct simplicity to his writing that I very much appreciate. Side note: Moreau isn't slathered with makeup and riding around in a Popemobile in the book.

Finished the Resurrection audiobook.

I actually didn't want it to end, I got a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Preach it!  :D

It makes me want to eventually check out AC Crispin's other books, particularly her Star Wars/Star Trek work.

I think my dad has some of her Star Wars books.

And I need to see if Bill Hope has recorded any other books, aside from Aliens.
