Return to Oz (1985) -- what can I say? despite being a kid friendly fantasy movie, it's a bit creepy
seriously...Dorothy at the mentally ill asylum, the shapeshifting rocks, the headless princess (able to change her head according to the occasion), the
"half human-half bike
" guys, and the final moments of the villain giving me a vibe of
'Saturn Devouring His Son
' by Francisco Goya. I liked the robot. It was an in between of C-3PO from
'Star Wars
' and Jake the dog from
'Adventure Time
' (I know is a modern TV show, but I am a big fan so I can't help falling in pareidolia
). The designs and special effects were similar to those in the movie
'The Neverending Story
'. That being said, I dig Emerald city (ruins) and citizens turned into stone. It reminds me of a sci fantasy story in the
'One Thousand and One Nights
' anthology about a lost civilization whose inhabitants are petrified (although more similar to taxidermy) and the characters are escorted through the city by a robot. The chicken character was a bit annoying though. But overall I enjoyed this
"strange in a strange land
" tale
as I'm feeling like hungry for some retro fantasy (I prefer science fiction and horror, but sometimes one need a break.
'The Dark Crystal
' is guilty too though
).
