In the early '90's we logged onto BBS's (bulletin Boards) before the internet.  I was a closet nerd and logged onto the Sci Fi boards with a username that did not sound female, just so no one would suspect I was a girl.  Not pretending to be a boy, just left out that minor detail because I worried about not being taken seriously in science forums. 

Back then usernames were called...your gonna laugh..."handles" lol.
