Yessir, ME2 is a masterpiece. But it's definitely worth playing through ME1 first every time.

I also highly recommend Kingdoms of Amalur.  They're all playable on Xbox One as well.

I still think they should somehow find a way to repurpose the original ending.  As I understand it, the heavy use of mass effect technology causes a buildup of dark energy which makes stars age prematurely (e.g. Haestrom).

IIRC, that's why the Reapers eradicate all of the technologically advanced civilizations every 50,000 years.  If they didn't, this "mass effect" would grow beyond their ability to control and eventually destroy every star in the galaxy.

Hence the significance of the series title is finally revealed.

Admittedly I never played the third game until after they patched in the extended ending, but I honestly never understood all the hate for it. I loved it, and the conclusion wound up being about what I expected it would (in terms of coming down to a choice between A, B or C).
