According to JW Rinzler's, The Making of Alien, Giger originally wanted the entire landscape to be biomechanical. In the film, the landscape mostly looks natural but in these shots you can see perhaps some efforts were made into making it look biomechanical with the mechanically shaped, ribbed tubing snaking across the entire landscape, (not just in front of the derelict as seen in the film).
