Then either get him a less garish shirt, or get someone else to do the interview.
Cool

I wonder what would have happened if the scientist had been a woman wearing a Conan the Barbarian shirt.
"Neat shirt, everyone loves it, cool movie, aw man a scientist chick who loves fantasy movies what a perfect woman!"

Because of course such a thing is entirely likely and not at all stupid.

And several days ago you would have said exactly the same thing about #Shirtgate :P

Oh but surely it can't be that simple.

This whole thing is stupid.

And entirely avoidable.

Yep.

Shouldn't have worn the shirt.

Shouldn't have reacted so poorly to the shirt.

Yep.

Shouldn't have worn the shirt.

Shouldn't have reacted so poorly to the shirt.

Whole situation in a nutshell.

Shouldn't have reacted so poorly to the reaction.

How naive do you have to be to think that someone wouldn't point it out?  And that f**kwits wouldn't threaten the woman who pointed it out with rape and death?  And that bloggers wouldn't rub their hands together with glee at the clickbait articles forming in their self absorbed heads as they take sides.

The internet must amplify everything out the wazoo in order to feed.

I don't know, I guess I just hold out hope that people have matured just that little bit not to let such things bother them.

The Internet is truly one of our greatest inventions as a species.

Case in point.

The interviewer wasn't the one who complained. It was these folks., followed (I think it was in this order) by Rose Eveleth.

Why? How could they have predicted people would have lost their shit over a shirt of all things?

Once again...

QuoteHow naive do you have to be to think that someone wouldn't point it out?

It doesn't matter who complained - the fact remains such a shirt shows a remarkable lack of professionalism on someone's part.  You might be able to get away with wearing it in some work environments, in many others you wouldn't.  That's neither here nor there.  Only an idiot would wear it when representing their employer in front of the worlds media to talk about such a remarkable scientific achievement.
