Considering we can't even properly address any major issues facing us on a relatively quick geologic scale, such as climate change, peak oil, and inevitable food shortages, entertaining the idea that we'll actually be able to get our shit together enough to go out and find other worlds to populate is kind of a pipe dream.

All it would take is ONE country saying they were going back to the moon and/or mars and everybody else would be in.

There are just a bunch of liberals out there who are more concerned about bottlefeeding all the do nothings and have nots out there.

Getting settled in space could be more likely than fixing those other problems for the same reasons those problems aren't being addressed properly: Money.

Yeah, going to space is costly. But you can charge out the arse for it, too, and make money on developing and selling the tech necessary.

Ain't no one going into space now except rich 1-percenters on vacation to an orbiting space station a decade or so on.

If that.

It's not about getting in to space. It's about getting resources out of space.

And then the industry grows, becomes cheaper, grows, etc.

Before you know it we've still got politicians saying climate change is a political, not scientific, issue, while rich people chill in their moon-spas with their moon cocktails being served by their moonservants.

Wouldn't be a problem if everybody worked on a solution.  The problem would be finding the resources to make space worthwhile.  If you land on the moon and there is nothing but a bunch of common minerals and ores used on earth then it would be pointless.

However land on moon find some sort of resource that makes oil passé then the worlds top engineers would find away to make that stuff abundant on earth.  You have to establish the want to first.  Right now your trying to convince a pro basketball team to become pro football players.  They don't see the point in doing it.

Alternatively everyone dumps its prison population on the moon and it becomes Australia II.
