Why would it be called Antarctica if it's not in Antarctica?

The same reason you might name a space prison Alcatraz or any other instance where names have been used/reused for future versions of things.

It could be like the original construction yards for the Enterprise. The dock the 1701 was built at was supposed to be in geo-stat orbit above San Francisco. "San Francisco Fleet Yards."

Maybe that's what's going on there?

That seems like a pointless rationalization.

Because saying "Contacting Toad-Suck traffic control, Come in Toad-Suck" would just sound silly.

Imagine all the other potential applications for that quote around here.

Symbolism!
Makes more sense than the traffic control actually being in Antartica

Why does it being in Antarctica not make sense?

The Nostromo was approaching Earth's southern hemisphere.

Wouldn't it be better if this was in space though? So if you are approaching from the northern hemisphere you can't reach them because the Earth would be blocking you? You would have to know to contact Artica Traffic Control. Sounds a bit ridiculous, no?

No.

It's like a having a different traffic control for an airport when approaching from different sides.

It's more like having a different traffic control for a different airport in a different part of the world.

I don't imagine there's only one traffic control for all of Earth.
