Ripley was more like a trucker in the first movie. If any, the idea of gender was not pronounced until she started stripping to her underwear near the end of the first movie.
As asides, I read somewhere that the actresses who play Ripley and Vasquez were into theater, and I think the same applied to several in the first movie, who became known in drama and crime films.
