Issues with the essay:

Ripley didn't do things alone in the first or the second movie. In the first, everyone else died.

She wasn't always a "protector" because she didn't want Kane and others in, following protocols. She also wanted the site nuked even though there could still be survivors.

She didn't exactly sacrifice herself in the last movie because she knew she'd die, anyway.

Some reactions to that:

Ripley was more like a trucker in the first movie. If any, the idea of gender was not pronounced until she started stripping to her underwear near the end of the first movie.

As asides, I read somewhere that the actresses who play Ripley and Vasquez were into theater, and I think the same applied to several in the first movie, who became known in drama and crime films.
